IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING-RAIL FOR CARRIAGE SEATS.
flip, gtlgchnle nfetnt in in flgrse giants 33mm amt uniting part at up time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BAUMGARTNER, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and improved Shifting-Rail for Attaching Tops to Carriage Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carriage seat with my improved shifting-rail attached.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a neat, simple, convenient, and substantial mode of attaching the shifting-rail to the stationary rail of the carriage seat, so that, when the top has been removed, no bolts or projections will be exposed to catch upon and tear the clothes of those riding in the carriage. And it consists in securing the shifting-rail to the stationary rail of the carriage seat by means of books and scrcwbuttons, or clamps, in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
A is the carriage seat, and B is the stationary rail, which is secured to the back and ends of the seat A by straps C in the ordinary manner. D is the shifting-rail, to which the back-rest E is connected by the arms e, as shown in fig. l. c are the bolts or pins, to which the frame of the top or cover is secured in the ordinary manner. Upon the under side of the side arms d of the shifting-rail D are formed, or to them are securely attached, blocks d and (i as shown in figs. 1 and 2. Upon the under side of the blocks {Z2 are formed hooks F, whichpass down through the holes in'the stationary rail B,'or in the straps G, by which said rail is secured to the seat, in such a way that when the said shifting-rail is in place, the said hooks may take hold of the under side of the rail or strap, and he held securely in place. Upon the under side of the block 01" are formed hooks G, having less bend than the hooks F, which pass down through holes in the rail 13 or straps C. The blocks 3 and hooks or pins G are designed to give strength and support to the shifting-rail D, and especially to support that part of said rail that passes around the corners of the seat A. Upon the under side of the part of the shifting-rail D that runs along the back part of the seat, are Formed, or to it are attached, blocks d,
from the under side of which project pins or-bolts, having screw-threads out upon them, upon which screw the buttons or clamps H. Directly beneath the blocks 11 are formed slots or holes through the rail B or straps oi' such a size and form as to allow the buttons or clamps H to pass through them. lhen, by turning the button- H one-quarter around, they will be in a position across the said slots, andwill at the san c time clamp the said rail or strap between their upper edges and thelower sides of the blocks (Z.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 Securing the shifting-rail D to the stationary rail of the carriage seat A, by means of hooks F G'amt. screw-buttons orclamps H, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. i
The above specification of my invention signed by methis 9th day of January, 1867.
FREDERICK BAUMGARTNER.
