To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of corsets; and the objects of my invention are to provide a corset of improved construction, to combine therewith improved hip-pads, and to provide certain improvements in details of construction, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved corset. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of a portion of one of the hippads, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of a portion of the pad.

In constructing my improved corset I form the lower portion of the side of each section thereof with an outwardly curved or bulged pad portion, as indicated at a. The upper side of the padded portion is, as shown in the drawings, formed on the curved or upwardlybowed line, which extends from a point in the rear portion of the corset-section to the line of front whalebones b. In order to construct said hip-pads, the hip portions of the corset are provided with two or more thicknesses of goods 0 and cl, between or within which is inclosed a suitable yielding padding material 0. As indicated more clearly in Fig.

3 of the drawings, the outer pad-covering c is constructed of loosely-woven or other suitable ventilating material. It is obvious that this same material may be employed for both sides of the pad, if desired.

f represents the usual corset-side steels, which in extending from the upper to the lower portion of the corset pass over and are secured upon the padded portions a. These steels, as shown in the drawings, are bent or drawings, I also allow the narrowerwhalebones g to pass over and be secured to said padded portions. Owing to the fact that both the steels and whalebones are carried down and bent outward over and secured to said pad, it is obvious that not only Will the pad be thus made to retain its desired shape, but that the material contained therein will be prevented from waddin g or Working from one side to the other of the pad. It will also be seen that the outwardly-curved steels, which pass over the padded portions, will serve to prevent an undesirable binding of the corset sides against the hips, thereby admitting of a free and unobstructed hip movement.

In constructing my improved pads the same are so shaped as to fit neatly down over the hips of the wearer and impart thereto a desirable rounding and graceful enlargement.

It will also be observed that the employment 7c of the pads will prevent the bones and steels from pressing into the flesh and becoming a source of discomfort to the wearer. By providing the pads with a covering of ventilating material it will be seen that means are provided for entrance of air to the padding material, thus providing for the proper drying of the pad in case the same becomes dampened from perspiration.

Having now fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a corset construction, the body thereof having rounded outWardly-projecting padded hip portions, the padding material thereof be- 8 5 ing covered with a ventilating material and the steels and bones of said corset-body passing downward over said padded portions, said steels being bent to conform to the hip shape, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 9o
