SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 387,753, dated August 14, 1888.
Application filed May 9, 1888. Serial No. 173,342. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IDALIA WEED, acitizen ol' the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and ligu res of reference marked thereon.
The object of the present invention is to provide a corset that will perfectly support the bust and insure the dress fitting perfectly and comfortably without interfering with the action of the lungs or of other vital organs, and will be cool and healthful.
The invention consists, therefore, in providing a corset which is constructed with the usual vertical stays with an elastic band around its lower edge and a belt connecting with the band or lower edge of the corset by means of flexible strips, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows a perspective view of my improved corset upon the body of the wearer, Adesignates the corset, provided with the usual shoulder-straps, a, and vertical stays.
This corset does not differ materially from those in ordinary use, except that it is made much shorter and extends only slightly below the breast, and at its lower edge is provided with an elastic band, B, preferably composed of a series of elastic cords, so that the corset will snugly fit around the body immediately below the breast.
The corset is provided with a belt, 0, having a suitable buckle, b, or other well-known means of fastening it when brought around the waist, and is connected to the corset by a series of bands, 0, or by a continuous strip or piece of cloth or other material, as found preferable.
As will be seen, the corset does not extend more than two inches below the breast, and consequently the waist is not compressed or contracted, and the belt, which can be loos ened at pleasure, keeps the corset in place.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A corset provided with vertical stays and shaped to the body of the wearer, and provided with an elastic band extending around its entire lower edge, in combination with an independent belt having flexible strips connecting the same to the said lower edge of the corset and means for clasping the belt in front, asset forth.
In teslimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
