NrTn STaTns .aTnNT Tries,
JAMES N. BURTON, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF TO J. 'FRANK BECK, OE SAME PLACE.
COMBlNED POCKET-KNIFE ND MATCHHSAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,555, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed September l, 1899. Serial No. 729,199. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES N. BURTON, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pocket-Knife and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention contemplates the provision of a combined pocket-knife and match-safe, and will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in whichi Figure l is a longitudinal section of the combination device, the same being taken in the plane indicated by the broken line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections taken in the planes indicated by the broken lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. l. a detail perspective View of one end of the handle with the cap or cover in an open position.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the several views of the drawings.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the handle A comprises a longitudinal central compartment B and longitudinal receptacles or pockets C, disposed at opposite sides of the same, and is made up of a springbar D, which forms the bottom of compartment B, and sections E, which form the side walls of said compartment and also constitute the pockets C. The sections E are preferably cast of metal, but might be otherwise formed of metal or other material suitable to the purpose without departing from the scope of my invention. They are solid at their rear ends, as indicated by a, and open at their opposite ends and are connected together by a transverse rivet b and together and with the springbar D by a transverse rivet c. The former rivet serves as a pintle for the knife blade or blades F, while the latter serves to secure the spring-bar D in position after the well-known manner. At its rear end the spring-bar D is arranged to engage the knife blade or blades, so as to hold them againstcasual movement when the knife is closed or open, and at its Fig. 5 isforward end is provided with the reduced portion d for a purpose presently described.
The pockets C, formed in the sections E, are designed for the reception of matches, which are secured therein by a cap or cover M common to the two pockets or receptacles. This cap or cover M is preferably concavoconvex in form and is provided with a luge, which is interposed between the inner Walls of the sections E and is pivotally connected thereto by a pintle f. The said lug e of the cover M is also arranged below the reduced end d of the spring-bar D, whereby, as will be seen, the bar is enabled to hold the cover against Vcasual movement both when it is closed and when it is open. This precludes the escape of matches from the receptacles and insures the exclusion of dirt, dac., therefrom.
For the purpose of enhancing the nish of the combination device I prefer to provide the sections E with slabs g, of buck-horn or the like, said slabs being secured in position by by rivets, as shown.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that I have provided a combined pocket-knife and match-safe which is compact and simple in construction and is susceptible of being manufactured almost, if not quite, as cheaply as a pocket-knife of corresponding size and quality. These advantages are due in large measure to the fact that the side sections of the handle A are made to serve as match safes or receptacles, and the spring-bar D is made to serve the twofold function of holding the blades F and the cover M in their open and closed positions.
While for the reasons stated I prefer the construction forming the present embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to be under` stood as con lining myself to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made in prac tice as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, 1s
l. A combined pocket-knife and match-safe comprising a handle having a blade-compartment, and match-receptacles arranged at opposite sides of the blade-compartment and IOO open .at one end of the handle, a blade pivotally mounted in the blade-compartment adjacent to one end of the handle, a cover for the match-receptacles pivotally connected to the handle at the opposite end thereof, and a spring forming the bottom of the blade-compartment and arranged to act against both the blade and cover, substantially as specified.
2. A combined pocket-knife and match-safe, comprising a handle having a blade-com partment and a match-receptacle, a blade, a cover for the match-receptacle, and a spring arranged to act against both the blade and cover, substantially as specified.
3. In a combined pocket-knife and matchsafe, the combination of a handlecomprising a longitudinal blade-compartment and longitudinal match-receptacles disposed at opposite sides of the compartment; said handle being made up of a spring-bar, and hollow sections, open at one end, which constitute the match-receptacles and serve in conjunction with the spring-bar to form the bladecompartment, a blade pivoted in the handle and arranged to be engaged by the springbar, and a cover, for the match-receptacles, having a lug pivoted in the handle and also arranged to be engaged by said spring-bar, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit'- messes.
JAMES N. BURTON. Witnesses:
