PNEUMATIC-TUBE CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,459, dated June '7, 1881.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. LEAYORAFT, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful lm 'n'ovement in Parcel-Carriers for Pneumatic Parcel-Dispatch Tubes, of which the folloning, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and accurate description.
The object of myimprovement is to provide a new and improved parcelcarrier for pneumatic parcel-dispatch tubes, which is adapted especially but not exclusively for use in the pneumatic tube shown and described in my Letters PatentNo.178,784,granted to me June 13, 1876, for pneumatic parcel-dispatch tubes.
In the drauings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved parcel-carrier when open. Fig.2 represents a plan view of the same when closed. Fig. 3 shows a sectional view of the end of the same, when open, on lincxw, Fig. 1.

My carrieris formed of two cylindrical pieces, A and B, of any suitable material and of any size desired, hinged togetherlongitudinally by the hinge 0.
At each end of the carrier is a separate compartment, 0. These compartments 0 are provided with a spiral or elliptical spring, D, or other elastic material, which is secured in the said compartments 0. This spring D will act with equal force either side of the center ofthe hinge 0, and by its act-ion will hold the parts A B of the carrier open, or hold them tightly together when closed.
The function of the compartments 0 at the ends of the carrier is to serve each as a covered receptacle for its spring D, so that in the operation of the latter, in opening and closing the door, the parcels in the carrier will not interfere with the action of the springs. An arm, (I, is secured to the cylindrical part A at one end, and to the pin a on the outer end of said arm, and beyond the hinge O the U- shaped end of the spring D is pivoted, the opposite end of said spring being pivoted to the part B, by which construction the spring will hold the part B open or closed.
Secured to the compartments 0 of the parts A and B of the parcel-carriers are the pads Gr, preferably made in three parts, the part next to the compartment 0 being preferably a temperedstcel disk, It, with an angular flange. These disks h are secured to the part-sg of the said pads G. These parts g are made preferably of leather, and are secured to the end parts of the said pads G, which are made preferably ot' (:Olliriti shape, and of felt. The object ot' these pads is to prevent the carrier from being injured or its momentum retarded in its passage through the pneumatic tubes, and also to prevent the carrier in its'ejection from the ejectingvalve of the pneumatic tube from injuring the valve. These pads G G also keep the carrier closely locked in its passage through the tube, and prevent any injury to it.
Having thus described my invention, what i claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, :s-
1. The parcel-carrier composed of the sections A and B, provided with separate compartments c and springs D.
2. The pads G, provided with the parts 9 and disks h, and in three sections, in combination with the sections A and B of the carrier.
3. The parcelearrier composed of the two sections A and B,and provided with the separate eompartmentscand springs D and pads G.
