TABLET AND IN DEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,147, dated September 19, 1899.
Application filed June 3 0, 1 3 9 8.
To (ti/L wiwnt it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES G. NOLEN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tablets and Indexes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a novel attachment for telephones;v and it consists, essentially, in a series of tablet-holders, one of which constitutes a portion of the telephone-casing, in which are detachably arranged a plurality of tablets adapted to have printed upon them the subscribers telephone-list.
The invention further consists in the novel construction of the tablet-holders, and still further in the peculiar arrangement and com-' bination of the various parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a telephone generator-box, illustrating a series of tabletholders attached thereto and the inner holder of the series forming the door or lid of the box. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the telephone attachment, showing the holders closed and the 3 represents the blank from which a holder is formed. Fig. 4 illustrates in perspective a single tablet-holder, its tablet, and the pintle which connects one holder with another; and Fig. 5 is a Vertical central section through a holder, showing the tablets arranged therein.
In Fig. 1 the letter A designates a telephone generator-box, upon the side B of which is preferably arranged the call-bell O and the receiverD. To the front of the box is secured a series of tablet-holders E, the inner holder F of said series constituting the box-door and being secured to the holder by means of a spring-catch G, which is adapted to engage over a plate a, arranged in the outer edge of the side B of the box, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
In construction each tablet-holder is formed, preferably, of a metallic blank H, Fig. 3, which is preferably cut away upon two of its edges at b and c and has its corners beveled, as shown. The blank thus described is fold- Serial No. 684,797. (No model.)
ed upon itself at or near the middle in such manner that the end I will extend at some distance beyond the end J. These ends are then preferably secured together by bending v over the extension'piece or flange 6 upon the line (I and over the end J. The blank being thus folded, marginal guides are provided for the tablets upon each side of the holder by bending over in opposite directions the upper edges J J of the blank upon the linesfand g and by bending over in a similar manner upon lines h and vi the lower edges K K. Between these flanges tablets L are detachably inserted.
The hinge for the holder is formed by bending to one side the upper and lower portions of the loop or central bend to form pintle-receiving sockets M and N and to the opposite side the central portion of the loop to form a similar socket O, as plainly shown in Fig. 4. A pintle P is adapted to pass through the upper and lower sockets of one holder and the central socket of the adjacent holder forming an ordinary knuckle-joint between the parts. A pintle-socket (not shown) similar in construction to O is arranged upon the telephonecasing, and a pintle P is inserted through said socket and the upper and lower sockets of the door-holder, forming the desired hinge.
From the description thus given of my invention it will be readily observed that I have so located a series of holders upon the inclosing casing of a telephone that it will be directly in front of the operator, and the series of holders being stationarily located in this position the telephone-number when found will be constantly before the eye of the user of the telephone, which dispenses with the necessity of constantly referring to the usual telephone-book. It will also be observed that means have been provided whereby extra tablet-holders bearing additional names of subscribers may be added to the series of holders at any part of said series and that by locating the tablet-holders in the manner described I have dispensed with the ordinary door or lid of the generatorbox; also that means have been provided whereby a revised list of subscribers may be readily inserted in the series of holders.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a telephone generator-box open at one side, of a series of metallic tablet-holders detachably hinged one with another, the inner holder forming the door of the box, marginal flanges formed upon both sides of the holder, and tablets detachably arranged within the flanges.
2. A tablet-holder formed of a single sheet of metal, folded upon itself at ornear the middle forming two members, and having the ends of said members secured together, of oppositely-turned flanges formed by bending over the upper and lower edges of each member, and pintle-receiving sockets formed by portions of the loop or central bend.
3. Ina tablet-holder, asingle sheet of metal having notches in its upper and lower edges, beveled corners, marginal flanges along said upper and lower edges, and an extension-piece projecting from the outer edge of said sheet, such sheet being folded along a line running through said notches, and having the extension 6, turned over the edge J, whereby the plate is held in folded position, said marginal flanges being turned over to form guides which extend in the opposite direction from each other when the blank is folded, the folded edge of said blank having one or more cuts therein and having the separate portions extending in different directions, such portions forming pintle-receivin g sockets, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
