Be it known that I, J osErH BABST, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a frame comprisinga single strip of metal which is bent to form a front and sides extended rearwardly therefrom intermediate the inner and outer edges of the front, the said sides being provided with locking lugs or ears along their rear edges.

A further object is to provide a frame of the above character in which the locking lugs or cars are arranged to be bent in opposite directions to serve the double purpose of clamping the frame to a mat and the picture within the frame where the frame is used as an inside frame in connection with an outside frame and an intermediate mat.

in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a frame embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a back view with the back plate removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through the frame, taken in the plane of the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the blank from which the inner frame is formed. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail crosssections, on an enlarged scale, showing different steps in the formation of the frame.

The outer frame is denoted 1, its transparent front by 2, and its usual back plate by 3, which back plate is provided with suitable supporting-legs 1. The frame thus far described may be of the usual construction.

A mat 5 is located within the frame between the front and back plates, which mat has an opening therethrough, the walls of which are engaged with my improved inner frame. This inner frame comprises a single strip of metal bent to form a front 6 and sides 7, leading rearwardly at right angles to the front about midway between the inner and outer edges of the front. This is accomplished by bending the metal for a short distance back upon itself, as shown at 8. The face of the front 6 may be provided with suitable ornamentations 9. The rear edges of the sides 7 are provided at intervals with ears or lugs 10, which are adapted to be bent either inwardly or outwardly parallel with the front 6, as may be desired, to secure the frame to the mat and the picture-card 11 within the frame.

It will be seen that the inner projecting portion of the front 6 forms, together with the sides 7, suitable seats for the picture-card 11, so that when certain of the lugs 10 are bent inwardly the card is firmly held in position. It will also be seen that the walls surrounding the opening in the mat 5 are clamped between the outer projecting portions of the front 6 of the inner frame and the lugs 10, which are bent outwardly from the sides 7 of the inner frame.

A very simple and inexpensive frame for the picture-card is thus provided, which frame may be of any shape or size desired.

What I claim is 1. A frame comprising a single strip of metal bent to form a front and sides extended rearwardly therefrom intermediate the inner and outer edges of the front, the said sides being provided with looking lugs or ears along their rear edges.

2. The combination with an outer frame and a mat having an opening therethrough, of an inner frame fitted to the opening comprising a front and sides extending rearwardly therefrom intermediate the inner and outer edges of the front, said sides being provided with inwardly and outwardly folding lugs or cars along their rear edges arranged to lock a picture-card within the inner frame and the inner frame to the mat.

3. The combination with an outer frame and a mat having an opening therethrough, of an inner frame fitted to the opening comprising a single strip of metal bent to form a front and sides extending rearwardly therefrom intermediate the inner and outer edges of the front, said sides having inwardly and outwardly folding lugs or ears along their rear edges arranged to lock a picture-card within the inner frame and the inner frame to the mat.
