To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY CHARLES WAL- KER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Western Port, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in an improved construction and arrangement of parts of devices for holding doors open at any desired point, whereby a door provided with such device may be conveniently held at any angle and is not itself in any manner defaced, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view of the lower part of a door and its casing, the lower corner of said door being provided with my said invention and shown in section to more clearly illustrate its construction and use; Fig. 2, a sectional view through said device, separatelyand on an enlarged scale, with the parts as when not in use 3 and Fig.3, a similar view showing the parts in the other position.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the casing of the device, B the holding arm or lever, and C the operating-lever.
The casing Ais of cast or sheet metal adapted to contain the operating parts, preferably of much the form and construction as the casing of an ordinary mortise door latch or look,
and is adapted to be mounted in a mortise in the lower corner of the door, as shown in Fig. 1, or, if preferred, may be screwed to the outside of the door; but I prefer the arrangement shown, as the face of the door is then left entirely free and the device is wholly concealed.
The holding-arm B is in the form of abellcrank lever, pivoted at its angle on a pivot 1). Its lower arm extends in a horizontal direction (when not in use) and has an outer end provided with a point or friction-surface b, adapted to engage with the floor and hold the door. Its inner arm extends upwardly and is connected by a spring 3 with the opposite end of operating-lever O. The lower side of the casing is left open to permit this arm to be operated up and down freely.
The operating-lever C is mounted by means of an oblong perforation orslot on a pivot c at a point about the third of its length from its inner end. Said inner end is connected by a link 0 with the arm B a short distance from the pivot 1). Its outer end is pivoted by a pivot c to a sliding plate C mounted to slide vertically on the end plate of casing A, the side plates of said casing being preferably shown, to form a way within which said plate can freely slide and be guided. A vertical slot is formed in said end plate of the casing to permit said sliding movement,and akeeper c is pivoted just above the top of said plate O in position to hold the same in its lowermost position and hold the parts within the casing. Said keeper is in the form of a segment of a circle, pivoted at its center, and it is thus adapted to swing out and by its own gravity engage the top of said plate as soon as it is pushed down below the lower corner of said keeper. At or near the end of said plate C it is provided with alip C by which it may be pushed down by the foot or other means. Said lever O is provided with a series of perforations for connection with the spring 5, as shown, and the tension of said spring may thus be regulated as maybe found necessary.
The operation of my said invention is as follows: The door being fitted therewith, as shown in Fig. 1, and it being desired to secure the door in any position it is swung to said position, and by means of the foot or any convenient means the keeper 0 is pushed in, which frees the plate 0 and permits the spring 3, pulling against the lever G, to throw the arm B downward until its point 1) engages with the floor, the lever O and plate 0 going up to the position shown in Fig. 3, the necessary longitudinal movement of said le- Ver being permitted by the slot therein, through which the pivot 0 extends. When it is desired to release the door, it is only necessary to press down the plate 0 by means of the foot on lip c or any convenient means, lwhen the lever C will operate through the extended beyond said end plate slightly, as
link 0 todraw the arm B upward to'within the casing, at which point the corner of the keeper 0 will fall out over the top of said plate 0 and automatically lock the parts in this position, leaving the door free to swing and the device entirely concealed until again released.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A door-holder comprising a box-casing for inclosing the mechanism, a holding-arm mounted on a pivottherein and formed with its outer end adapted to extend down through the open lower side of said casing to contact with the floor, its opposite end being pivotally connected to an operating-lever, said operatinglever fulcrurned on a pivot between its ends in said casing, its outer end having an outside connection for operating itin one direction, a holding device for securing it, and a spring connected at one end to the inner end of the holding-arm and at its other end to near the outer end of the operating-lever, and 1 arranged to exert its force to draw said points toward each other and throw the holding-arm down into operative position when the parts are released, all substantially as set forth.
2. In a door-holder, the combination, of the casing, the holding-arm Bin the form of a bell-crank pivoted at its angle on the pivot B, the lower arm provided with an outer holding-point, and the upper arm being connected by means of a spring to the outer end of an operating-lever C, said lever O pivoted between its ends and connected at its inner end by a link to the arm B, and at its outer end to a sliding plate 0 and the pivoted keeper 0 for securing said sliding plate and lockin g the parts within the casing when not in use, substantially as set forth.
