ARTHUR M. VAI'IT AND HERMAN F. BALL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
JOU RNAL-BOVX FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 631,348, dated August 22, 1899.
Application filed April 6,1899. Serial No. 712,012. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR M. VAIT'I and HERMAN F. BALL, residing at Cleveland, in the county of -Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful I1nprovements in Journal-Boxes for Railway- Oars; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in journal-boxes for railway-cars, and more especially to a box of the character indicated that is provided at its outer end with a lid that is adapted to close the said end and is hinged to the box properat the latters top.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a construction that will exclude the ingress of dust into the outer end of the box at the top, bottom, and sides of the box between the lid and the box proper.
With this object in view and to the end of rendering the construction simple, durable and convenient the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and com-- In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is an outer end elevation of a journal-box embodying our invention. Fig. II is a section on line II II, Fig. I, looking outwardly. Fig. III is a section on line III III, Fig. I, looking outwardly. Fig. IV is a central vertical section of the outer end portion of the box. Fig. Vis a section on either one of lines V V, II, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. VI is a top plan ofthe outer end of the box.
Referring to the drawings, ct designates the outer end portion of the box proper of our improved journal-box. The box proper is open at its outer end in the usual manner for arranged centrally of the pivotal connection tion of the lid is enlarged forwardly, as at b2, to accommodate the location and operation of the spring cl employed to retain the lid in the latters closed position. The said spring is interposed between the inner side of the lid and the forward side of the lug a' and extends from a point forwardly of the said lug, against which it bears, downwardly and is secured at its lower end to the lid in any approved manner. The forwardlyenlarged portion b2 of the lid has the shape required to form a hood that covers the lug c at the front, sides, and top and prevents dust and dirt from entering the space behind the lid around the lug ct. To prevent dust and dirt from entering the space within portion b2 of the lid at the top and rear of the lug a', the said lug is provided with a rearwardly-facin g shoulder a3, that is formed upon the lug in any approved manner, which shoulder extends the full width of the lug and is engaged by a iiange b3, thatis formed upon and depends from the upperend of the hood-forming portion b2 of the lid and snugly engages the aforesaid shoulder in the lids closed position. The lugs portion a4 below the shoulder as has a trend concentric of the axis of the pivotal connection between the lid and the box proper, so as not to obstruct the sweep of the flange b3 when the lid is swung from its closed to an open position, or vice versa.
To prevent the ingress of dust and dirt into the forward end of the box proper, at opposite sides of the lug ct', the lid b, below and a short distance from the'sleevesb, is provided with rearwardly-projecting flanges b5, that are arranged concentrically of the axis of the pivotal connection between the lid and the box proper and closely overlap the shoulders a5 upon the box proper, which shoulders extend also concentrically of the axis of the said IOO pivotal connection. The trend of the shoulders a5 and the overlapping flanges b5, concentrically of the axis of the aforesaid pivotal connection, accommodates the swinging of the lid, as required in actuating the lid from a closed to an open position, or vice versa. IVe would here remark that the lid b has bearing upon the box proper preferably only at shoulders d5, as in the case illustrated, and not at the pivotal pin, and to insure an adequate bearing between flanges b5 and shoulders a5 at all times the pin-hole a2 in lug a is elongated downwardly and in line with the lid when the latter is in its closed position, so as to accommodate the descent of thelid, and consequently the lids flanges b5, as required, to take up any wear upon or between the bearing forming surfaces of flanges b5 and shoulders d5, and hencea tight joint is always maintained between the said members a5and b5 in the closed position of the lid.
To prevent the ingress of dust and dirtinto the outer end of the box proper from below, the lid is provided at its lower end with a rearwardly and downwardly projecting flange b4, that in the closed position of the lid overlaps the outer side of the bottom of the box proper.
To exclude dust and dirt from entering the outer end of the box proper at the latters sides, the lid is provided at each side with a rearwardly or inwardly projecting flange b, that extends from top to bottoni of the lid and is arranged to engage in the closed position of the lid a groove a, formed in the adjacent side of the box proper, which groove extends from top to bottom of the box.
As shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, the flanges b5 b5 extend from lug ct' to and terminate in the different flanges ZJ b, respectively. Flanges bG extend from flanges b5 to and terminate in flange b4, and flange b4 extends, therefore, from the flange b at one side of the box to the flange b at theopposite side of the box. ln fact flanges b4, b5, and bo form a continuous flange that extends from one side of lug a to the other side of the said lug. The grooves c6 are open at their ends, as already indicated, and the two open ends of each groove as are arranged, preferably, in a straight line, so that a stick capable of entering the said groove endwise can be conveniently used in cleaning the groove. We would remark also that preferably the bottom of the box is provided externally with a forwardlyfacing shoulder a7, extending from side to side of the box and arranged to overlap the longitudinal edge of flange b4 in the closed position of the lid. The said shoulder 0.7 is instrumental in preventing air-currents from carrying or forcing dust or dirt in between the inner side of the said flange and the bottom of the box in the lids closed position.
