Be it known .that I, WILLIAM J. I-IARE, of the city, eou'nty, and State of New York, have invented u. new and improved Loek; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and `exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art, to 'Inake and use tl'levsarne, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichl V Figure 1 represents aplan or sectional inside view of this invention; the line x x, fig. 2, indicating 'the plane of section. This invention relates to a lock,theV principal working parts oi'ai'hich consist of two spring jaws, which catch into a neck on the stud or nose secured to the door, lid, or other part to be locked, and which are forced a art b the action of a key on one or more wedrres, which enter between the s rin 'aws and com )el them to D e P g l release the stud or nose in sucha manner that a simple and secure lock is obtained, which cannot be readily picked or blown \open, and which can be applied with advantage to doors of any description, or to trunksor ,otheinarticles of a\similar description.

A represents a case made of cast or sheet metal lin any suitable form or shape. This case is provided with a cavity, @,iwhich may be squarejor oblong, and forms the guide for `two jaws, G. These jaws are forced towards each other by springs, b, which may be made of' steel or any other suitable material, and either Such,

as shown in the drawing,- or coiled or in any suitable form or shape. The inner edges of these spring jaws are provided with cavities or notches e, which are intended to catch in the neck d of a stud or nose, il). This stud or nose may be attached to a hasp, or it may be arranged in any suitable mannerso that when the head of the same is forced in between the spring jaws, the door is locked. In order to o'pen the door, the springjawsvhave to be forced apart so that the same release the stud D. This object is effected by one ortwo wedges E, which are connected to levers F, from which suitable links G extend into the cylindrical `case H,'n which the key K is inserted. By the action `of this key on the ends of the links G, the wedges E are forced in between the spring jaws C, compelling them to separate far enough to release the stud D. It is obvious that the key, for this lock, can be madesimple or complicated, and it' desired one of the wedges can he dispensed with, but in all casesthe spring clamps are entirely detached from the wedges or their attachment, and no access can he had to the same, and the operation of picking the lock or blowing the same open is rendered almost if not quite impossible. 1

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The springjaws C, in combination with a stud, D, one orv more wedges' E, and a key, K, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
