KETTLE LIFTER.
(Application filed May 10, 1899.)
{No Model.)
n 95mg PEYERS co, mu'rouma. wumuom UNITED STATEsT PATENT OFFICE;
KETT L' E-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,317,
dated August 8, 1899.
Application filed May 10,1899; Serial No. 716,287. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duhring, in the county of Forest and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Kettle-Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for preventing tea-kettles and other culinary vessels from becoming dry, and thereby damaged by the heat of a stove, and has for its object to provide a device which will automatically remove when the water has been reduced to a predetermined quantity either by use or evaporation and prior to the time when the vessel would become entirely dry.
To this end the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, F igure 1 is afronteleva,
tion of the device shown in connection with a stove and applied in operative position to a tea-kettle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing the position of the device after the tea-kettle has been removed from the stove Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the swing ing arm of the device. Fig.4c'is a similar View of the fixed arm thereof. Corresponding parts are designated by like reference characters in'all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a stove of common or-ordinary form, and 2 a tea-kettle carried upon the top.
of the stove, these parts being shown to more fully illustrate the application and operation of the present device.
In carrying out my invention I employ a base 3, fastened to the door adjacent to one side of the stove and near the back thereof. Fitted to this base is an upright standard 4:, extending a suitable distance above the top of the stove and provided intermediate offlits ends with a relatively-fixed arm 0r; .member 5 and a laterally-swinging member 6, located above the fixed member. a
By reference to Fig. 4; it will be seen that the fixed member comprises a hollow or tubular arm provided near one end with a vertivby means of with the opening 7 and adapted to bear against which extends upward from the member.
flat plate 14:, forming a fully described,,
the rod.
.and inclined toward cally-disposed transverse opening 7, adapted to slidably receive the standard and held thereon atany vertically-adjusted position a set-screw 8, communicating the standard. Inclined. upwardly from the outer end of the fixed member is an arm 9, provided with a plurality of openings 10 and carrying at its upper end a ring or collar 11,
alined with the opening 7 in the inner end of the fixed member and adapted to receive the standard, so as to the tea-kettle or other vessel from the stove brace the member there- The upper inner end of the inclined arm is braced by means of a suitable arm 12, the inner end of Slidable longitudinally within the hollow armb is a rod 13, carrying at its outer end a table or platform, the latter being connected to the rod by means of, a thumb-screw 15, passing loosely through the rod and entering a threaded opening formed centrally in the. plate. The rod is adapted to be adjusted toward and away from the standard, and it may be held at any adjusted point by means of aset-screw 16, carried by the hollow arm 5, near the outer end thereof, and adapted to engage the side of As best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the swinging member comprises a hollow arm having at one end a vertically-disposed transverse opening;'17, adapted to loosely receive the standard 4, so that the member may be adjusted vertically and swung laterally thereon. Pendent from the outer end of the member the standard at is an arm 18, provided with a plurality of openings 19 and carrying at its lower end a ring or collar 20, alined vertically with the opening 17 and adapted to loosely receive the standard, whereby the member is effectively braced. .The ring end of the arm 18 is connected to the member by means of a pendent .bracel21. A rod 22, having at its outer end a hook 23, is slidably mounted within the hollow arm 6 and is adapted to be held at any adjusted position therein by means of a suitable set-screw24, carried by the arm at or near .its outer end. Located between the fixed and swinging members is a sleeve 25, slidable upon the standard and adapted to be adjustably held thereon by means of a set-screw 26. The purpose of this sleeve is to form an adjustable support or stop for the swinging member,
whereby the latter may be adjusted toward or awayfrom the fixed member and yet permit of the swinging movement of the member.
Pendent from the hook 23 of the swinging member is a coiled spring 27, provided at its lower end with a suitable hook 28 and at its upper end with a short length of chain 29, so that any of the links may be engaged with the hook 23,whereby the hook 28 may be adjusted vertically with relation to the table or platform 14. The members 4 and 5 are entirely independent of each other, but are adjustably connected together by means of a coiled spring 30, having its opposite ends hooked into the desired openings in the inclined braces 9 and 18, respectively.
In the application of the device as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the fixed member is adjusted so that the table or platform 14 is on a level with the top of the stove. The rods 13 and 22,respectively,are adjusted so that the spring 27 may hang directly over the center of the table or platform 14, and the swinging arm is then'turned or swung over the stove and the hook 28 engaged with the handle of the tea-kettle 2. It will be understood that when the swinging arm is thus turned to one side a tension is placed upon the coiled spring 30, which has a normal tendency to return the swinging member to its normal position parallel with the fixed member; but this is prevented by reason of the combined weight of the tea-kettle and the watercontained therein. However, when the water has been reduced to a predetermined quantity either by reason of evaporation or use the combined weight of the kettle and the water is also reduced below a predetermined weight, and
when this point is reached the tension of the spring 30 is snfiicient to return the swinging member to its original position, thereby antomatically removing the kettle from the stove and placing the same upon the platform 14.
Bymeans ofthe sleeve 25 the swingingmember may be adjusted with relation to the fixed pose of accommodating the spring 27 to kettles of different sizes, and the spring 30 is adapted to be connected with'any of the openipgs provided in the inclined braces 11 and 20 for the purpose of adjusting the throw or movement of the swinging member.
The present invention provides a simple and practical device which may be readily applied in position without altering or changing the construction or form of a stove, and will antomatically and eifectively remove the kettle or other Vessel from the stove, so as to prevent damage to the kettle by reason of the same becoming dry. 7
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the claims may be resorted scope of the appended :Standard member, as will be understood, for the purto without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
