Letters Patent No. 62,738, dated March 12, 1867 antedmed February 228, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN VACUUM-PUMPS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it ltnown that I, EDWARD DUNSCOMB, of the city of Boston, county of bufl'olk, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented n. new and useful Improvement in Vacuum-Pumps, and hereby declare to be full, clear, and exact descriptions ofthe some, reference being had 'to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which` l n denotes u. cistern, suitably situated, lied with water, or other proper substance, to make a. water-tight joint. o is' a bell, nhich, by its descent into the .contents of 1o, makes the water-tight joint. In the roof of o is a hole. 1] is :1 cap, which is put on the hole in o to close the hole, and taken oft to open the hole in o. :n :c are cars firmly secured to roof end ofzo. qq are cords, one end of' which is bound to ears z a'. r r are pulleys situated above eistern n. The cords q q pass over the pulleys r r. P Pore weights, to which the other ends of the cords q`q are secured. K is a rertical pipe. One end of K enters. .the bottom, and runs up to the top of cistern n. The other end-of pipe K enters the horizontal pipe z'. 2', a horizontal pipe, has stop-cocl s ll'. t is :t vertical pipe, which has stop-cock m. One ond o f pipe it enters pipe z'. The other end of pipe h is connected vithor enters into the vessel where vacuum is required. m is the stop-cock of pipe h. j is the vacuumpnmp, formed by the several parts above described.
To'nork the vucuuu1pump,`irst empty bell o of'air, take o' capy, close stop-cocks l l m, take oi weights P'P, when bell o will descend into its cistern n, and, by its descent, drive out all nir from itself through the hole,
in its roof. To restablish vacuum in vessel desired, screw on cap y, hang on to bello its weights P P, open cocks l l m. Bell n is drawnv np by descent of its weights P P, and'exhausts into itself all air from the vessel wherein vacuum is required. Now expel the air from bell o, as before described, open the cooks l Z m, and hung on the weights I P, when the pump empties the vessel wherein vacuum is required of alll vapor. If the contents of the vessel wherein vacuum is needed be gas, the bell o draws upgandv stores in itself the gas for utilination,
ns explained in iny application of this date for patent for vaeuum-pumps, vacuum-pans, vacum-stills, and
vacuum-retorna.
Claim. I claim the peculiar construction of the vacuum-pump jj; that is, as composed of the vessels n and o, and
pipes 'v 1' K, with Vtheir stop-cocks, to operate both as vncuum-pump and vapor-receiver and storer, substantiallyxs in manner described.
EDWARD DUNSCOMB. Witnesses C. H. GRIFFIN,
JAMES SKINNER.
