ALEXANDER Moon, oF MAQUOKETA, IOWA, Lenen Patent No. 65,684, dated .am 11, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS..
'dlgs 'Sdgemls referat in in tipa tettets atmt imi making @im nf tlgs ami,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A.' MOON, of Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful improvementin Double-Action Pumps, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanyingvdrawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent. I
In the present invention the pumping-cylinder and plunger are both arranged, by the upward and downward movement of a common operating handle or lever, hung to suitable tubes connected therewith, to move up and down, the one within the well and the other within the pumping-cylinder, and the one after the other, and are so provided with valves arranged to open in any suitable manner and in the proper directions, vas to produce a double action of the pump, and to cause a continuous discharge therefrom.
Y In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in pumps'is illustrated, the gure being a central vertical section through-the pumping-cylinder and its piston or plunger, with 'the connecting tubes in partial vertical section and elevation, and the means employed for operating the pump.
A, in the drawings, represents the pumping-cylinder or barrel, which is to be placed within the well, below the level of the water therein. B,.a valve in lower end of pump-cylinder A, arranged to open inward. C, the plunger or piston-head to cylinder A, in which it is arranged to move water-tight up and down. D, the pistonrod to plunger C, to which it is applied at one side, and passes up through the head to the cylinder A, and from thence tothe top of the well, where, by means of a link-piece, E, it is hung to a handle or lever, F, upon one side of its fulcrum-point G. The plunger-rod D is made hollow or of a tube-shape, and at its lower end through a valve, H, opening inward, it communicates with the pump-barrel below the plunger. I, a spout or nozzle, at upper end of plunger-rod D, `and above the top ot" the well. J, a tube secured to upper end or head of pumpcylinder, and with which it communicates through a valve, K, This tube J at-its upper end is hung through a link-piece, L, to the handle or lever F, hereinbefore referred to, upon the opposite side of the fulcrum-point to that of the plunger-tube D. M, a spout or nozzle in tube J, at a point above the top of the well. N, a valve in upper end of pump-barrel, which valve is arranged to open outward.
From the above description of my improved construction and arrangement of a pump, it is-plainly obvious that, by moving the handle or lever F up and down, a double action is secured thereto, and consequently a con-. tinuous discharge of water from the spout or nozzle produced, both the pump-barrel and plunger being moved up and down, the one after the other, with the former within the water of the well, and the latter within the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, I `claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the pumping-cylinder or barrel A, plunger C, and tubes D and J, when all constructed with valves and arranged together so as to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
' The aboveV specification of my invention signed by me this fourth day of March, 1867.
ALEXANDER MOON,
Witnesses:
THOMAS WRIGHT, DANIEL FINT'ON.
