I-IALF TO JOHN F. MCDONALD, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
CHECKREIN HOOK OR FASTENER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,005, dated June 13, 1899..
Application filed May 1'7, 1898. Serial No. 680,916. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHNSTON MEALEY, of the city of Howard Lake,Wright county, Min.- nesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oheckrein Hooks or Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to checkrein hooks or fastenings; and the object of the invention is to provide a fastening which will securely hold the checkrein and prevent the same from becoming detached except by intent,
The particular object of the invention is to provide a checkrein-hook that may be employed to fasten the loop of an ordinary checkrein of either the overdraw or side check style.
The invention consists gen erallyin a checkrein hook or fastener embodying a bar whereon the rein is placed, a back plate, and flanges or tongues upon said parts to prevent the slipping of the rein from said bar.
The invention further consists in various constructions of the device, hereinafter. de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of a checkrein-hook embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a back View of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of'the device. Fig. 5 is a back View of the hook as adapted for use with the side check. Fig.6 is a front view thereof. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same.
' is provided with the overlapping hook or finger G, and the check-strap is held between this and the elbow or connecting part 7 between the portions 2 and 4. The bar 2 is quite closely arranged with respect to the plate portion 4, and the loop of the strap is prevented from backing off of the bar 2 by the plate 4, and, further, by a side lug or flange 8 upon said bar 4. In an overdrawcheck hook there is but one part 8, while in a side-check fastener the finger 6 and the flange or curved lug 8 are duplicated, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. It will be further noted that the strap cannot be bent down and passed between the finger 6 and the lug 8 without the bending or crimping of the strap, which could neveroccur except by intent. The finger might be in the form of a flange extending the full length of the bar 4; but I prefer to make the same at the middle of the bar only, as shown, in order that the open corner 9 may be left to allow the strap to be bent to one side, and thus more easily caught under the finger 6. The shank 5 has both square and threaded portions, and the bar'4 is shouldered next to the square part of the shank, so that when the nut is drawn up the hook Will be firmly seated on the saddle of the harness.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A check hook or fastener, comprising the bar 2, the plate 4, and the connecting part or elbow 7, the shank 5, said bar 2 having at its end a finger 6, and said bar 4 provided with a lug 8, substantially as described.
2. The check hook or fastener, comprising the bar 2, the plate 4, a connecting part or elbow 7, and a suitable shank, said bar 2 being provided at its end with the backwardlyturned finger or hook 6, and said bar 4 having a curved lug 8, substantially midway between its ends, substantially as described.
3. The check hook .or fastener, comprising the bar 2, the plate 4, and the connecting part 7, the shank upon said connecting bar or portion 7, and said bar 2 having the downwardlyextending fingers 6, and said bar 4 having the forwardly-curved lugs 8, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of April, 1898, at Minneapolis, Minnesota.
JOHNSTON MEALEY.
In-presence of- G. G. HAWLEY, M. E. GooLEY.
