TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ProfessorI-IENRY ROBYN, of St. Louis, 1n the county of St. Louis, and the State of Missouri, have invented a new Type .and an Improved Mode of Printing the f System Braille, which was introduced by me into this country, and adapted to the English, German, and other languages, and also for music; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists of a new system, enabling the blind to communicate with each other by writing, and to preserve in permanent form such data as may be valuable and desired to'be preserved. The blind readily learn to set type from copy, to print, and to distribute.

The system Braille, referred to, was first introduced in France;- its object was to enable the blind to read either letters, music, or numbers, by the use of elevated pointson paper. To accomplish this object, Braille' used seventy different types, (after the same manner kdescribed in the accompanying specicatiou,)`whichby various combinations he was enabled to form the letters of the alphabet, numerals, and musical signs.

The new and improved system which I have invented, and for which I am now applying for Letters Patent, consists in the accomplishment of all that was accomplished by Braillewith seventy types, by the use of only ive types. I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of my invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of the specications, in which- Figures a of drawings numbers 1, 2, 3, .4, and 5, are shown in a longitudinal view.

Figures b of drawings numbers 1 2, 3, 4, and 5, are shown in a perspective view; and

Figures c of drawings numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, are show in a sectional view.

These several types being set up, according to combinations desired to be obtained, and'ithus fixed in a form of suitable construction, and a sheet of paper laid upon it, it is then subjected to pressure, the result of which is to leave upon the paper,von its reverse side, elevated points, answering to the points of the type, which said points constitute a means of giving instruction tothe blind through their sense of feeling.

I therefore claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The five several types, as shown in the drawing attached tothe specification.

2. I claim the combination ofthe iive several types, as shown in the drawing attached to my specification,

in the manner set forth in said specification.
