UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. CAMERON, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
G RAVE-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,894, dated January 3, 1899.
Application filed December 30, 1897. Serial No. 664,544. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HENRY D. CAMERON, a resident of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave- Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to meansfor improving the appearance of graves.
It has been observed that the graves in cemeteries for the first few months after they have been made are unsightly objects, the dirt being piled up and left to settle without any attempt being made to trim the grave until after the settling shall have taken place.
It is the object of my invention to provide means whereby to overcome these objectionable features of newlymade graves and to afford a convenient support for twigs, evergreens, and flowers over the entire mound, whereby to completely conceal the dirt mound or any settling of the mound which may take place.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view.
A represents a rectangular cover made of woven galvanized wire of coarse mesh, and is supported in an inverted position over the grave-mound by means of braces B, the vertical legs a of which are considerably longer than the sides of the cover, so that they may be driven into the ground, and thus rigidly support the cover. In order to prevent the top of the cover from sagging, a strip of wood or metal b is disposed longitudinally of the cover over the braces or supports B and under the top of the cover. The braces or supports B and also the longitudinal strip b' may, if desired, be secured permanently to the woven wire of the cover. I prefer, however, to apply the device over the grave in the following manner: One of the supports B is placed near the head and the other near the foot of the grave, while other supports B will be placed at intermediate points and in line with the end supports. On the top of the supports B the strip b is placed, and then the wire cover is placed over all, as shown in Fig. l. The strip b serves not only to support the woven-wire cover to prevent the sagging thereof, but it also serves as a means for leveling the supports B, so that they will all be the same height, and thus cause the cover to be equally supported by all of them. The coarse-mesh woven-wire cover constitutes a convenient support for green leaves, evergreen, holly, and similar material, which can be conveniently inserted between the meshes of the wire, and thus covernot only the gravemound, but also the woven-Wire cover.
My improvements are simple in construction and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a series of arched supports adapted to span a grave and to be driven into the ground, of a coarse-mesh, woven-wire device inverted over said supports, said woven-wire device being made of a shape to cover the grave and of a mesh adapted to receive and support, in its meshes, a covering of evergreens, leaves or similar material and a strip or bar disposed longitudinally under the woven-wire device and extending transversely over the arched supports, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have Signedthis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
