HENRY LANIUS, OF GALION, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,876, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed March 19, 1898. Serial No. 674,509. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY LANIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion,
. in the county of Orawfordand State of Ohio,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pipe-wrenches; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which comprises but few parts, so as to be very economical to manufacture, which shall be strong and durable in use,'and which can securely grip a pipe without danger of the latter slipping.
The invention consists, essentially, in a handle provided with an arrow or diamond shaped head provided with a series of teeth at the edges and formed with a central slot, in combination with a shank pivotally connected with said head and formed with two oppositely-extending jaws, the inner edges of which are at an angle to said shank and provided with teeth, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe-wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a pipe engaged therewith. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaw in a different position. Fig. 3 is a plan View. Fig; 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view.
In the said drawings the reference-mimeral 1 designates a metal handle formed with an arrow or diamond shaped head2, the edges of which are provided with teeth 3. Formed centrally in said head is a slot 4 for the passage of a rivet or pivot.
The numeral 5 designates a shank consisting of two parallel metal arms, the ends of which are pivotally connected with said head by means of a rivet 6, passing therethrough and through the slot in the head. Formed integral with said shank are two oppositelyextending jaws 7, the inner edges of which are at an angle to the shank and provided with teeth 8. The said shank is also pro virled with teeth 9.
In using the wrench the pipe is engaged by the teeth of the shank, jaw, and head, as seen in Fig.1, whereby it is prevented from slip"- ping, and the stronger the pressure upon the handle tending to turn the pipe the firmer the grip will be. By reversing the handle the pipe will disengage itself.
WVhile I have shown an oblong slot in the head 2, it may be a round hole, if desired; but I prefer to use the slot, so as to allow the shank to have a slight play.
From the above it will be seen that the pipe may be engaged by the four different sides of the head, so that if the teeth of one side should become worn the other could be used, and by employing two jaws if one should break the wrench would not be rendered useless, as the other jaw could then be brought into play.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a wrench of the character described, the combination with the handle and its arrow or diamond shaped head formed with teeth on all four of its edges, of the shank pivotally connected with said head and having oppositely-extending jaws integral therewith and formed with their inner sides at an angle thereto, the adjacent sides of the shank and jaw being provided with teeth, substantially as specified.
2. In a wrench of the character described, the combination with the handle, and the arrow-shaped head provided with teeth and formed with a slot, of theshank consisting of two parallel arms, formed with teeth and pivotally connected with said head and the oppositely-extending jaws formed integral with said arms with their inner sides at an angle thereto and provided with teeth, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witlVitnesses:
W. J. GEEK, V Gnnon LUNDY.
