Be it known that I, FRANK W. VOGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Monica, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a wrench which may be used upon nuts or pipes IO of certain sizes and which will firmly grip the nut or pipe on which it is being used to turn the same and which can be readily released therefrom. I accomplish this object by the wrench described herein andillustrated in 1 5 the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is aside elevation, partly in section, showing the wrench in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a like elevation showing the wrench in its open position ready to be placed upon a zo nut or pipe.
In the drawings, the wrench A is provided with an upper jaw A', the shank A of which is preferably at right angles to the innerface thereof and passes through an opening B in 2 5 the lower jaw O and into the slot D in the center of connectingbar D and is pivotally secured therein by the screw F, which passes through them. The other end of the connecting -bar D has a slot D through which 3o passes the reduced portion E of the shank of the lower jaw E of a companion wrench H, which is preferably of a different size. Bar D and the shank of jawE are pivotally united together by the screw F, which passes through them and unites them together. The lower jaw of wrench A has a rearwardly-projecting shank C', which has a slot C, that receives inf the end thereof the end of the shank of jawE of the companion wrench, and the two are 40 pivotally united together bya screw Gr. The companion wrench has an vupper jaw I, with a reduced shank I', which ypasses through an opening E in the lower jaw, (shown in dotted lines,) which opening is similar to the opening B in jaw O and passes into a slot J" in bar J, (shown in dotted lines,) which' slot is similar to the slot D of the bar D and is pivotally united thereto by the screw K, which passes therethrough and unites them together. Bar 5.0 J has a reduced rear end which passes through the slot DH of the bar D and into the slot O" of thejaw O and is pivotally secured thereto by the screw L, which passes through them and unites them together. When it is desired to use the wrench asa pipe-wrench, the inner bases of the jaws will be rounded and provided with teeth M, as shown in the companion wrench in Fig. 2. A spring N may be aflixed to one of the connecting-bars to cause the jaws to grip the nut or pipe.
It will be observed that a wrench is provided at each end of the tool, which may be of the same or different sizes. In the drawings I have shown them of diiferent sizes, and each size is to be adapted to [it upon a nut of a particular size, depending upon the distance between the jaws when in their closed positions, as shown in Fig. l, it being understood that when in that position they grip the nut with some pressure, thereby preventing the jaws from slipping off the same.
In the operation of my wrench the jaws are first thrown into their open position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the wrench is then placed upon the nut or pipe to be turned with the upper jaw on the top of 'the nut or pipe. The members of the companion wrench are then gripped by the hand of the operator, when by pressing down with the thumb upon the joint between the ends of the shank of the two lever-jaws the jaws of the wrenches are caused to close and grip the nut or pipe which it is desired to turn. If springNis used, it will close the jaws. The operator then lifts up on the members of the companion wrench, and thereby turns the nut. By pushing in the reverse direction the jaws are released from the nut. By providing the shank, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, with a plurality of holes therein the wrench may be adjusted to nuts of different sizes by removing the pivotal screw and passing it through'a different hole in the shank. i
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l Patent, is-
1. A duplex wrench composed of a wrench at each end thereof, each of said Wrenches having an upper jaw, the shank of which passes through an opening inthe lower jaw IOO and is pivotally secured to a connecting-bar; a lower jaw having an opening near the front end thereof through which the shank or' the upper jaw passes and a rearwardly-projecting shank which is pivotally united to the outer end or' the lower jaw of the companion wrench, the shank or' the lower liaw of each wrench being pivotally connected with the connecting-bar of the other wrench at or near the ends thereof.
2. A duplex wrench comprising two pairs of clamping-jaws, one pair at cach end of the wrench; connecting-bars pivoted together at or near the ends thereof, the shank, of the upper clamping-jaws of each pair passing through a hole in the lower clamping-jaw and pivotally connected to the outer end or' the connecting-bar.
3. In a wrench of the character herein described a plurality of bars pivotally connected at or near the center of the wrench and carrying` at their other ends clamping-purs suhstnntially as shown and descrilwd` the upper ronnccting-bar carrying on its outer `lree end a lower clamping-jaw and the lower connectingbar carrying on its other end un upper chunping-jaw pivotally connected thereto.
4. In a wrench ot the character herein described four connecting-bars piroled together as shown and described :1nd haringclampingjaws whose Shanks pass through the upper bars and are pivotally connected to thel outer ends of the lower bars, the ends of the upper bars torniing the lower clamping-jans In witness that l claim theforegoing l have hereunto subscribed luy naine this 14th day oi November, 1903.
