I PROTECTIVE COVER FOR EM ERY-WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,417, dated August 2, 1898.

Be it known that I, GEORG- BENIOKE, engineer, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Offenbach-on-the-Main,in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new The .high speed of revolution at which; emery-wheels are made to run renders the wheel liable to burst, as is well known,whereby the workman is constantly exposed to great danger of injury. .This cannot be entirely avoided even where the best material is employed for the wheels.
My invention has for its object to overcome the above disadvantage; and it'consists in forming a protective hood or cover of curved corrugated sheet iron or steel. This mode of construction allows of the cover or hood being adjusted within considerably wide limits and of thus being regulated according to the wear and tear of the wheel. In order, however, that all parts of the emery-wheel may be utilized, which. is necessary by reason of the variety of articles to be treated, the whole device is made to swing peripherally around the wheel.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views, of the adjustable supports of the protective cover illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The improved protective cover or hood consists of two or more corrugated curved strips J of strong sheet metal, which are attached to each end of a pair of side bars G and their free ends connected by plates H and pins K or other suitable fastening device. The fasmetalcover may thus be increased or diminished. Several holes are provided in the pair of side bars G for the aforesaid connection of the'other ends of the sheet-metal cover J by means of pins Z, so that the radius of the circle to be inclosed may also be altered at will. In order. also to allow of the cover being so adjusted that any desired part of the Wheel 0 may be accessible without the cover having to be removed, the side bars G are mounted in supports D in such a way as to swing around the wheel 0 in either direction. It is fixed in the desired position by "set-screws L, which work in a slot M in the support, or by other suitable means.
Figs. 3 aud t show clearly how the side bars G are mounted to turn on the upright supports D, which latter are fixed to the frame vof the Wheel 0. It will further be seen that the pins Z connecting the ends of the cover to side bars G also connect. as bolts the corresponding ends of said bars G and have nuts screwed on their ends against said side bars.
It is obvious that the improved cover may be constructed or employed with or without any or all of the above means of adjustment.
I declare that what I claim is- 1. A protective cover or hood for emerywheels consisting of strips of corrugated sheet metal adjustably connected to each other, and side bars to which such strips are adj ustably connected.
2. A protective cover'or hood for emery- Wheels, comprising strips of corrugated sheet metal, means for adj ustably connecting said strips together, swinging side bars mounted on the frame of the'emery-wheel, and means for adj ustably connecting the corrugated strips to the said side bars; in combination substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In-a protective cover or hood for emerywheels the combination with the cover proper, of swinging side bars carrying said cover and means for setting said side bars at any demetal J; perforated plates and pins II, K, eonneeting said strips end to end; side bars G mounted in supports I) and provided with perforations and pins Z for connecting the strips .T to the side bars G; and means for settingthe side bars at any desired angle; in combination substantially as described.
