TRUNK ALIFTING DEVICE. (Application median. 19, 1897.)
(No Model.)
IVTNESSES I l l VEA/701i'` IlNrTED STATES PATENT turen.,
ELIAS EDWARDS, OF RURAL HILL, MISSISSIPPI.
TRUNK-LIFTING DEVICE- SPECIFICATION forniing part of LettersyPatent N o. 606,858, dated July 5, 1898, Numan flied January 19,189.7. serai No. 619,804. (no moaei.)
To all whom t may concerni Be it known that I, ELIAS EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rural Hill, in the county of Winston and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Lifting Devices ;Y and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trunk lifting and moving devices, the object being to provide means whereby a trunk may be lifted to a convenient height and the lid supported for packing and unpacking or conveniently moved from one position to another ina room with little exertion.
My invention consists of a suitable movable frame carrying awindlass provided with hooks to engage the bottom of the trunk and straps or handhelds thereof, a hook to hold the lid raised when the trunk is elevated, and means, such as apawl, to hold the windlass immovable when the trunk is suspended at a convenient height. f
My invention also consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will hereinafter be described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis.
designate two sills or base-blocks mounted on casters or rollers, so that the device may be readily moved from one place to another. From each of said sills rises a standard B B', each carrying at the top a head-block c c', in which a windlass D is j ournaled. The end of the windlass on one exterior side has a crank E, by which said windlass'y may beturned, and a pawl f on the bearing-block c is provided to engage any one of a series of holes f in the windlass endito hold the windlass immovable whenever desired. A Suspended from the windlass adjoining th :inner side of each bearing-block' is a rope or .,cord g h,1each carrying at its free end a bailshaped hook g 71,', having inturned hook ends g2 h2 to engage the bottom of the trunk I at opposite sides thereof, as shown in Fig. l. Between the arms of each bail-hook is an engaging piece@` ijto takeV cros'swise beneath the handholds or straps jj on the ends of the trunk.4 Each handhold-engaging piece consistsof a piece of wire'bent to form an eye i2 and two upcurved arms 123. When thehooks are thus applied, the trunk may be raised by turning the windlass to the height desired for packing or unpacking. The lid 7n of the suspended trunk may be held open by a hook Z 0n the end of a short cord l', depending from the windlass intermediate of the two standards B B.
The standards B B may each beA provided with a block M N at a convenient height for supporting a rest-board O, on which thetrunk may be rested in order to relieve the hookcords from excessive strain.
I have provided a clamping and push block to hold the two sills in fixed relation while the device is being moved, and also whereby said device may be pushed from one position to another. This consists of a block P, provided at each end with an opening p to take about the standardsy and sills and prevent lateral movement thereof, and with handles p,whereby said device may be pushed from one part of a room to another part Where it is desired to deposit the trunk.
My invention provides a simple and effective device which takes up but little room, is ready for instant use, and saves both time and labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y l. A trunk-liftingdevice comprising a windlass having two pendent cords or ropes each provided at its free end with a bail-shaped hook toen gage the bottom of the trunk at the ends thereof, and engaging members to take beneath the end handholds of the trunk, substantially as described.
2. In a trunk-lifting device the combination with a windlass to lift the trunk, of a hook to engage the trunk-lid and hold it open, substantially as described.
3. In a trunk-lifting device, the combina- IOO tion with a windlass to lift the trunk, of bailshaped hooks to engage the bottom of the trunk at the ends thereof, and a hook to engage the trunk-lid and hold it open, substantially as described.
l. In a trunk-lifting` device, the combination with a Windlass to lift the trunk, of bailshaped hooks to engage the bottom of the trunk at the ends thereof, engaging members to take beneath the handholds on each end of the trunk, and a hook to engage the trunk-lid and hold it open, substantially as described.
5. In a trunk-lifting` device, the combination with a Windlass-frame mounted on easters, of a windlass, hook members pendent therefrom to engage the trunk, and a pushblock adapted to engage the Windlass-frame and provided with handles whereby the said frame may be moved upon its casters, substantially as described.
G. In a trunk-lifting,r device, the combination of base blocks, standards rising therefrom, a crank-driven windlass journaled at the upper ends thereof, hooks pendent from the Windlass to enga-ge the trunk, and a restboard supported between the standards and adapted to assist in supporting the trunk, substantially as described.
'7. In a trunk-lifting device, the combination with a windlass-frame, of a windlass, hoolc members pendent therefrom to engage the trunk, a hook to engage the trunk-lid and hold it open, and a pawl to hold the Windlass immovable, substantially as described.
S. In a trunk-lifting device, 'the combination of a Windlass-frame mounted on casters, a crank-driven windlass, bailshaped hooks pendent therefrom to engage the trunk at the ends thereof, engaging members to take beneath the handholds on the end of the trunk, a pawl to hold the Windlass immovable, and a rest-board supported in the frame and adapted to assist in supporting the trunk, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
