B. P. JOHNSON. BORDER FOR FLOWER BEDS.
Patented June 21, 1898.
rrnn TATES BORDER FOR FLOWER-BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,151, dated June 21, 1898.
Application filed October 2,1897. Serial No. 653,884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EVENTINE F. JOHNSON, of Nicholson, in the county of lVyoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Borders for Flower-Beds and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to borders for flowerbeds and other purposes; and it consists, essentially, of a metallic device having depending flanges at opposite edges adapted to be driven in the ground and a swell or enlargement near the inner edge to form a coping or guard around the flower-bed, the outer surface of the border being flat and adapted to lie on a level with an adjacent lawn, and not only serve as a walk, but also assist the operation of a lawn-mower in cutting grass at the outer edge of and on a level with the said walk.
The invention further consists of the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide an ornamental border which will not only serve as a means of ornamentation, but also the useful purpose of protection for flower-beds or around lots in cemeteries or graves, it being cheaply manufactured and easily and readily applied in proper position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the improved border applied around a central plat. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the. drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views, the numeral 1 designates a flat or horizontal plate having a flange 2 at the outer edge, which is tapered at the lower edge to form a penetrating edge 3. The flat or horizontal plate 1 may be made in any width desired. Near its inner edge the said platehas an upward swell or enlargement 4, and its margin 5 forms the upper portion of a second depending flange 6, which is also tapered to a lower penetrating edge 7. It will be observed that the outer faces of the flanges 2 and 6 are vertical, while the inner faces are obliquely arranged toward the lower penetrating edges 3 and 7 in order to permit the said flanges to be driven straight downward adjacent to the flower-bed or other plat, around which the inner flange 6 may extend, and also to have the flange 2 in like manner descend Vertically at its outer portion adjacent to the grass plat or lawn situated next thereto.
The form of the border, as shown in the accompanying drawings, is trifoliate; but it will be understood that this contour may be varied, and in the construction of the device as an entirety it is preferable that it be made of cast-iron or white bronze and painted or otherwise ornamented to produce a pleasing appearance.
There are many uses to which the device can be applied other than those enumerated,
.and it is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts might be made and substituted Without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new ,is-
1. A border of the character set forth comprising inner and outer flanges, a flat or horizontal plate, and an inner swell or enlargement, substantially as described.
2. A border of the character set forth comprising inner and outer flanges having lower penetrating edges and a flat or horizontal plate, and an inner swell or enlargement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. EVENTINE F. J OI'INSON.
