0. P. KVERNUM.
SASH HOLDER.
Patented May 24, 1898.
NIIF 'ra rns 1? artist rrient OLE I. KVERNUM, OF WAUKON, IOWA.
SASH -HULDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,537, dated May 24, 1898. Application filed June 23, 1897. Serial No. 641,921. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLE P. KVERNUM, residing at IVaukon, in the county of Allainakee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Window-Sash Stop, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to certain improvements in sash-locks.
An object of the invention is to provide a sash-lock adapted to be carried by the sash, so that the window can be raised or lowered and locked in the desired position without the employment of the usual cords, weights, (to.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash-lock simple in construction and composed of a few simple and inexpensive parts.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device in operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the lines t at of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an octagonal eccentric used in connectionwith my device.
Like letters of reference indicate similar parts wherever they occur throughout the'different views.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I have shown awindow-frame A, the sash B, and the jambB". 'Mortised or otherwise secured in the window-sash at any desired point, preferably near the lower part thereof, is a casing G, the side walls thereof near their upper and lower ends being provided with wedge-shaped slots D, the upper portion thereof being somewhat smaller than. the
lower part and having one of the corners thereof rounded, as shown at E, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. F indicates suitable rollers mounted within the slots D of the case, said rollers being freely movable up and down within said slots. In the opposite side of. the case and about the central portion thereof is a block G, eccentrically mounted, this block being provided with an opening extending therethrough to receive a key adapted to be passed through the opening I of the sash, so that the octagonal block can be turned from the inside of the window to bear against a curved flat spring J, which is arranged between the rollers F and the block G, said spring being inclined at its upper and lower portions, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so as to form a guide and bearing surface for the rollers and block of the case and allow of the block G being turned against one side thereof to press the said spring against the rollers, so that the same may be held tight or loose within the case, as may be desired.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to raise the window, the sash carrying the case is raised to the desired height, the face of the rollers bearing against the window jamb as the window is being hoisted, an easy upward movement of the window being had by reason of the rollers F revolving in the lower portion of the wedgeshaped slot. It will be noticed that a portion of the rollers extend a distance from the easing, so as to snugly contact with the jamh as the sash is raised. hen the sash is to be lowered, the rollers will be forced back into the rounded upper part of the enlarged opening of the slot, and when lowered to the desired position said rollers will run out of the enadapted to be carried by the window-sash and operating in such a manner that the employment of the usual ropes and weights will be dispensed with.
Having thus fully described my invention, 9
what I claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A sashdock comprising acasing to be secured in the window sash provided with wedge-shaped slots in each side near the edges, the large ends of the slots being downward and having a rounded corner, rollers mounted on pins or shafts journaled in said slots, an eccentric block in the casing near its rear edge journaled in the sides thereof, and a fiat spring interposed between the eccentric block and the spring bearing forward and downward on each roller, substantially as described.
OLE P. KVERNUM.
