LOCKING PIN OR'BOLT.
No. 595,155. Patented Dec. 7, 1897.

UNrTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK ERXLEBEN, O F XVAYNE, NEBRASKA.
LOCKING PIN OR BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,155, dated December '7, 1897.
Application filed February 8, 1897. Serial No. 622,465. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, FRANK ERXLEBEN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Vayne, in the county of Vayne and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Pins orBolt-s and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locking-pins, the object being to provide a special construction of pin adapted to hold the two portions of a windmill-pump plunger together, whereby the said two portions of the plunger may be quickly and conveniently connected together or disconnected for pumping by wind or hand power.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fullydescri bed, and specifically set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view showing the adjoining ends of the two portions of agiwindmill pump plunger and my improved device connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking-pin and connections removed.
Like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
In windmill-pumps of ordinary construction the two portions of the pump-plunger are connected by a small pin passing through openings therein and having its end confined by a split key. The objections to this manner of connection are many and obvious, the chief of which being that when the pump stops for lack of wind and hand-power becomes necessary this pin has to be taken out in order to disconnect the two plunger members, which is a disagreeable piece of work, especially in the dark or in cold weather. Another objection is that the said pin and key, when disconnected, are very often lost, as they are not permanently connected with the windmill-frame.
My invention contemplates the provision of a locking-pin device permanently connected with the frame and adapted to be instantly thrown into and out of connection, in order that the two members of the pump-plunger maybe readily engaged and disengaged without annoyance and inconvenience.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the two side pieces of one member of the pump plunger rod, which is connected with and operated by the mechanism of the windmill, and 1 the plunger-rod, which connects directly with the plunger itself. My invention comprises a locking-frame 3, having three fixed sides, two of which, 4:, are parallel and have their ends 5 screw-threaded, said frame being adapted to fit about the two side pieces of the plunger-rod member 2 and adjacent the lower end thereof. A clampingplate 6 fits upon the said parallel sides l of the lockingframe and is confined thereon by nuts 7, engaging the said screw-threaded ends 5. The said clamping-plate and fixed side of the ,frame opposite said plate bear against two opposite pieces 2 of the windmill-plungerrod members, and thus clamp the frame thereto. The said locking-frame is provided with a lateral extension 8, having an end flange 9, and a side standard 10, provided with a vertical slot 11. A pin or bolt 12 extends through openings in the said flange 9 and the side of the frame from which the extension projects and is adapted to pass through opening 13 14 in the plunger-rod members 1 2 and connect said members together. A lever 15 has one end connected by a pivot 16 to the said locking-pin, and the rear end thereof is connected with a pin or bolt 17, passing through and occupying the vertical slot 11 in the said standard 10 of the locking-frame. The other end of the lever is angularly bent and projects laterally beyond the lockingframe and constitues a handle portion 18. By moving this lever one way or the other it will be seen that the locking pin or bolt will be instantly thrown into and out of locking engagement with the said two members 1 and 2 of the windmill-plunger rod. The locking bolt or pin when engaged to hold the two members of the plunger-rod is firmly held in such engagement and cannot work loose.
My invention provides a simple and cheap construction of device which, unlike the pin commonly employed, is permanently connected to the windmill-pump-plunger rod and may be thrown into and out of engagement, which is an obvious advantage over the ordinary locking-pin above referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In windmill-pumps, the combination with the two plunger-rod members thereof, of a three-sided locking-bolt frame having two of said sides arranged parallel with each other and provided with threaded ends, a clampingplate adapted to engage said threaded ends, an extension 8 projecting laterally from said frame and having an end flange and a side standard provided with a vertical slot, a locking-bolt moving in openings in the said frame FRANK ERXLEBEN.
