Description
L. P. CLARK. Bedstead-Pastening.
' No. 209,022. Patented mm, 1878.
"--WI'TNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVIN P. CLARK, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEAD-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 209,022, datcdOctober 15, 1878; application filed March 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, LEVIN P. CLARK, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Bedstead- Fastenings, of which the following is a specification and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of bedstead fastenings wherein provision is made for drawing together the two parts of the bedstead after their connection; and its object is to efi'ect a vermin-proof joint between the bed post and rail, as will hereinafter fully appear,
In the description of the said invent-ion which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a part of a bedstead rail and post connected bymeans of my improved device, portions of the wood-work and the inner plate of the device being re moved. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on the dotted line ar Fig. 3 is a face view of a part of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures.
A is the casing or outer plate of the main member of the fastening device, secured by means of screws to the inner side of the rail 3, and G the inner plate, secured to the outer one, A, by means of rivets, screws, or similar appliances. D is a bolt, which, when the device is in use, connects the two parts or members of the fastening device, and holds the post and rail together. The secondary member, E, of the device is aflixed to the bedpost F, and consists in a thimble having a flange or projection, over which the end of the bolt D is hooked. The inner end of the bolt D, confined within the casing A, is increased in width, and provided with an opening, a, in
which is located the mechanism for moving the bolt to and from the bed-post. This mechanism consists in an eccentric, d, supported by hubs e, which penetrate the plates A and (J, and a lever, f, attached to one of the hubs, to be used in turning the cam. The movement of the cam d in such direction as to efl'ect the tightening of the joint between the post and rail is communicated to the bolt D through the medium of a vibratory link, g, one end of which rests in a circular depression in the bolt.
To unite the bed post and rail, the bolt B is first extended or forced outwardly to its eX- treme limit by means of the eccentric d, and
the outer end of the said bolt, which is hooked, inserted in the thimble E, secured to the post. The eccentric is then turned in an opposite direction, which causes the post and rail to be drawn tightly together.
In order to reduce the strain upon the screws holding the casing A to the rail B, in the operation of the device, a block, G, is secured to the said rail, against which the end of the said casing next to the bed-post F bears, the said block being slotted to admit of the passage through it of the bolt. Upon the rail being brought into contact with the post, a pin, h,
projecting from the end of the rail, enters a small thimble in the post, which serves to maintain the rail and post in their proper relative positions, while the fastening is completed by means of the devices before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure b Letters Patent, is-
The casing A, eccentric d, link g, and sliding bolt D, in combination with the thimble E.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 29th day of January, in the year of our Lord 1878.
LEVIN I. CLARK. Witnesses:
WM. T. HOWARD, NOAH CLARK.
