SELF-CLEANING COMB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,002, dated November 23, 1897. Application filed December 10,1896. Serial No. 615,155. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER L. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wood ley, in the county of Brevard and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Cleaning Combs and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Myinvention has relation to improvements in the construction of self-cleaning combs; and the object is to provide a simple and effective device for this purpose; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings the same reference-figures indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved self-cleaning comb with the cleaning-sheath in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the sheath slid down on the teeth to remove the accumulations. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of one end of the comb and sheath. Fig. 5 is'a perspective detail view of one of the end teeth and the cleaning-bar.

1 represents the ordinary form of comb, having the outer end teeth 2 2 made somewhat shorter than usual, and on their outside is formed a longitudinal groove 2, terminatin g in a ratchet-shaped tooth 3 near the point of each tooth.

4 represents a rectangular sheath formed with a series of rectangular orifices 5 5, which encompass the teeth of the comb, said sheath being arranged to slide freely up and down a on said teeth. The outer ends of said sheath are formed with integral spring-fingers 7 7, which engage the recesses 6 6 at the upper end of the groove 2 on the outer teeth 2 2 to hold the sheath up against the back of the comb,and when the sheath is to be slid down the teeth to remove the accumulation the fingers are released from the recesses 6 6, and when the sheath has been moved down beyond the end of the teeth, as shown in Fig. 2, these fingers engage the teeth 3 3 and prevent the sheath from sliding entirely off of the comb.

The device is very simple, convenient, and expeditions in its action, it only being necessary to slide the sheath down once to detach the foreign matter from the teeth, which is scraped oft by the lower edge of the sheath, from which it may be readily wiped off with apiece of suitable material.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

A comb provided with solid integral end teeth 2 2 formed with longitudinal guidegrooves 2 2 on their outer opposite edges, the lower ends of which are provided with integral ratchet-shaped teeth 3 3, and having recesses 6 6, located in said grooves near their upper ends and extending below the plane of the bottom edge of said grooves, in combination with the sliding sheath 4, having integral spring-fingers 7 7 formed onits outer ends and projecting into said guide-grooves, and adapted to alternately engage said teeth 3 and recesses 6, as and for the purpose set forth.
