,ANDREAS ANDERSEN, OF TISTEDALEN, NORWAY.
APPARATUS lFOR BARKING AND WASHING Loes.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,870, dated November 16, 1897.
Application led Tune 10, 1897. Serial No. 640,184. (No model.) Patented in Norway November 18, 1895, No. 5,093, and in Finland December 17, 1896, No. 669.
To CLU whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, ANDREAS ANDER'sEN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Tistedalen, Norway, have invented certain Anew and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Barking'and Washing Logs, (for which I have obtained patents in Norway, No. 5,093, dated November 18, 1895, and in Finland, No. 669, dated December 17, 1896,) of which the following is `a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus in which the wood that at woodpulp mills at a later stage is ground to woodpulp is, on the surface of water in a tank, freed from bark, projecting knots, sand, and dirt. By means of this apparatus there is obtained not only a considerable saving of.
material when compared to other barkers, but also, by means of practical arrangements,
.the bark and other refuse which at some Wood-pulp mills cannot be utilized as fuel is conveyed to a suitable place.
. the centrifugal pump l?, is fitted on the in- .ing shafts c.
ner side with a number of horizontal rotat- To these shafts are tted S- shaped irons d, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The unwashed wood that is raised by means of the lift e is led into the tank a. The suitably funnelshaped lower-portion of the tank a being iilled with water, the wood that is iioating on the surface of this water is subjected to the action of the rotating shafts or rollers c d until all the bark and dirt are loosened. The removal of the bark and the washing are done by the radial hoe-shaped arms or irons d on the rotating shafts c, which put the water, and thereby also the wood, in motion. Owing to the upward pressure of the water the wood is constantly brought within the reach of the outer end of the rotating arms d, whereby the bark and other foreign substances are, so to speak, cut off from the wood. The wood having been cleaned, the contents of the tank-Wood, water, and refuse-are emptied through the trap-door or shutter f, which is operated by means of the chain g running over the pulleys h h from the drum 1l. The wood then falls on the inclined plane 7c, whence it is carried voff by means of the lift Z. ln the lower part of this lift there-are a number of spouts m, that cleanse the wood from what dirt and loose bark may still be adhering to it.
In ordrfo regulate the level of the water in the apparatus in such a manner that it shall constantly be in about the same height as the rotating rollers, as shown at X, Fig. 1, the sides of the tank a are fitted with slits n, through which the surplus Water is carried off by means of the conduits o o.
The shafts c are rotated by means of belting p or in some other way.
q are stirrup-formed irons fastened to the wall of the tank a and pla'ce'd between the S- formedirons d in order to prevent the wood from getting blocked between the tank-wall and the rotating rollers.
Fig. 3 shows the way in which the irons d are xed to the shafts cby means of stirrups r, that connect the irons and the shaft by means of a bolt and nut.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy 1. An apparatus for barking and washing logs and the like, consisting of a tank adapted to contain Water to float the logs, and rigid rotating beaters having cutting extremities arranged to act upon said logs as they are yieldingly supported by the water, substantially as'described.
2. An apparatus for barking and Washing logs and the like comprising a tank adapted to contain water to float the logs, rigid rotating beaters having cutting extremities adapted to contact with said logs as they are.
yieldingly supported by the Water,.an in- A clined discharge-plane beneath the tank, a discharge-trap at the bottom of the tank for discharging the contents of the tank upon the inclined plane, and a lift at the extremity of the inclined plane, substantially as described.
3. An apparatus for barking andv washing logs comprising a tank adapted to contain water to float said logs, rigid beaters having IOO cutting extremities rotating Within said tank, overfioW slits or openings at the level of the beaters and Water-conduits connected with' said openings, substantially as described.
4. An apparatus for barking and Washing logs Comprising a tank, shafts rotating therein, the beater-irons d, and the stirrup-irons o' for holding them to the shafts, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1o my invention Ihave signed my naine, in presenee of two Witnesses, this 27th day of March, 1897.
ANDREAS ANDERSEN.
