Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GARET B. DAVIS AND CHARLES B. DAVIS, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
lMPROVED BED-BOTTOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,994, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, l-ARET B. DAVIS and CHARLES B. DAVIS, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Spring Bed-Bottom 3 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accon'ipanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a cross-section of a bedstead with our improved bottom applied thereto, taken on the line .r r, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the saine.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
The object of our invention is to construct a spring bed-bottom with a uniform springing capacity, and very simple in construction, and not likely to get out of order.
Our invention consists in the employment of bow shaped cross pieces, the convexity or bulge being upward, the side cross-pieces at either end upon elastic bands, and provided along their upper tace with sonic suitable means for holding the slats in proper position, also, in the employment, in connection therewith, of rods or girders attached at each end to elastic bands, and so arranged that braces or blocks between them and the bow-shaped cross-pieces will support the said cross-pieces and prevent their being bent out of proper shape.
To enable others to understand our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A designates the posts of the bcdstead, and B B' the side and end rails, respectively, which together constitute the frame of an ordinary bedstcad. U U designate two bow shaped cross-pieces, one being located at the head and the other at the foot of the bedstead. These cross-pieces are intended to be placed so that their convex side will be upward, as shown clearly in Fig. l, and they rest at each end upon elastic bands I), which are secured to the sides of the frame in any suitable manner. In the present instance the bands are strips of india-rubber run through staples a, and carried nnderthe ends of the crosspieces C and through eyes b made in the ends of two strengthening rods or girders, E E, and secured to the under side ofthe cross-piece C by screws or the like, c.
The strengthening rods or girders E are linked together at some point ot their length, as shown at d, to permit of their having a t'ree play. Ie prefer to use linked rods, though the link might be dispensed with, if found advisable.
Between the cross-pieces G C and the strengthening-rods E blocks or braces (one or more) F are placed, which will prevent too great a depression or bulging downward ot' the crosspieces C C, and at the same time insure the desired springing motion by compelling the rods, as they are depressed, to sink downward, the elastic bands allowing them to do so.
G (lY are the slats, which are intended to reach from one crosspiece C to the other, and rest thereon.
In the present instance the mode et' attacln ment to the cross-pieces U is by eyes made through the ends ot' the slats, which allow ot` their being placed over pegs or pins c c, se cured along the cross-pieces U at suitable distances apart.
This manner of constructing the bottom of a springbedstead is simple and elicient. lt is easy in every respect to the person resting npon it, and it is so constructed that any of its parts being damaged or deranged by use can be replaced by new ones without any change ot' the old parts. Should the slats become bent by continued use they can be readily turned, and they will soon become bent back in proper shape, and, any one being broken, a new one can be readily substituted in its place.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The strengthening rods or girders E E, in combination with the bow-shaped erosspieces U U and elastic bands D, substantially as specified.
