Description
UNITED STATES PATENT CDEEIoEe EDWIN DWIGHT BABBITT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PEN-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters, Patent No. 58,572, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, EDWIN DWIGHT BAB- BFIT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pen-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- 1 Figure l is an elevation of my improvement, in part perspective. Fig. 2 is a sideI sectional elevation. Y
This improvement consists in the combination ot' a spring with the barrel ot' the penholder in snch a Inanner as to depress the .rear end ot .the pen when it is inserted, thus throwing out the front end of the pen upon an angle with the pen-l1older, the said spring also serving as an elasticsprng for the rear end of the pen, causing the latter to write with great-er ease, and permitting otl the introduction iii-iid security ot' pens of different sizes within the same pen-holder.
This pen-holder may be made in any of the usual forms, either wholly or partly of metal.
The handle and pen-holder may be made in one piece, or the pen-holder may be made of metal and attachedto a wooden handle, in the usual manner.
In the sides of the pen-holder, near the extremity thereof, incisions are made in such a manner as to form tongues a, which are bent inward and project into the barrel of the penholder, where they form clamps, between which the sides ofthe pen b are held, as shown.
Upon the top of the pen-holder and :rearward of the tongues a incisions are made, so as to form a spring-tongue, c, which is depressed and projectsal into the barrel of the pen-holder.
When a pen is introduced into this holder, the rear end of the pen comes in contact with the spring-tongue c, which depresses the rear end ot' the pen and causes the front and front part of the pen to project at an angle from the line of the barrel ofthe holder. This an gular position of the pen renders the act ot writing much easier and prevents all spattera ing of ink, as the point of the pen, owing to the inclination, will pass over the paper Without catching therein. The spring c also eXer= cises a yielding pressure upon the rear end of the paper, which is favorable to ease in writ ing, especiallyin making the shaded lines. It likewise permits the ready and firm holding ot' pens ot' different sizes.
There are various forms in which the spring c can be introduced into the pen-holder, and therefore I do not limit or confine myself to any specific form.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture- A penfholder constructed substantially as herein shown and described.y
