SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,460, dated June 15, 1897. Application filed May 23,1896. Serial No. 592,772. (No model.)

Be it known that I, RICHARD CHOINAN Us, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Chairand Boot- Black Stand, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to chairs; and the object thereof is to provide a combined chair and boot and shoe blacking stool, a further object being to provide a chair which is also adapted to serve as a stool for blacking shoes and boots; and with these and other objects in View the invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom pan ying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved chair and stool; Fig. 2, a sectional side view thereof, showing the slide which constitutes the stool extended and showing a portion of the hinged seat of the chair raised in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a View similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form of construction; Fig. 4, a View similar to Fig. 2 and showing the hinged seat lowered into its normal position.

In the practice of my invention I provide a chair of the usual form, which consists of a base plate or board 5, to which is secured the usual back, comprising legs 6, said legs being connected by cross plates or strips 7, and the base plate or board 5 is also provided at its forward edge with legs 8. At each side of the base plate or board 5 are preferably arranged strips or bars 9, and I also provide a seat, which consists of two parts 10 and 11. The part 10 is rigidly secured in place and provided with side plates or boards 12, which are rigidly secured thereto and to the bottom or base 5, and the part 11 is hinged to the part 10, as shown at 13, and is also provided with side plates or boards 14 and the front plate or board 15, in which is formed an oblong opening 16, and the front plate or board 15 is adapted to rest on the side strips or bars 9, and by means of this construction an oblong slot 17 is formed at the front of the chair, and I also provide a sliding plate or board 18, with The outer corners of which are pivotally connected legs 19 by means of a rod 20, and said legs 19 are adapted to be folded adjacent to the ends of the plate or board 18, and mounted on said plate or board 18 is a footrest 20, which is adapted to serve as a support for the foot while blacking boots or shoes. The forward portion 11 of the seat is adapted to be folded backwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in this position thereof the legs 19 may be folded adjacent to the sides of the plate or board 18, and said plate or board and the support 21 may be slid backwardly into the chamberbeneath the seat or the space between the base or bottom plate 5 and in operation the hinged portion of the seat and the rigid portion 10 thereof, and this space or chamber is also adapted to serve as a receptacle for blacking-brushes, boxes of blacking, and other and similar articles.

In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification of this construction in which the legs 19 are rigidly secured to the sliding plate or board 18, and the operation of this form of construction will be substantially the same as that hereinbefore described, the only difference being that the legs 19', being rigidly secured to the plate or board 18, cannot be folded adjacent thereto, and said legs 19 are adapted to fit within the legs 8 and are secured to the bottom or base board 5 of the chair.

This device is simple in construction and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Acombined chair and boot-blackin g stool or stand, comprising a chair, a part of the seat of which is hinged in position, and adapted to be folded backwardly, said chair being also provided with a plate or board,which is adapted to he slid outwardly beneath said seat, and said plate or board being provided with suitable legs which are adapted to support the outer edge thereof, said chair being also provided beneath the seat thereof, with a chain ber or receptacle, and said sliding plate or board being provided with a suitable footsupport, and the legs or supports, for the sliding plate or board being hinged thereto, and adapted to be folded adjacent to the sides thereof, substantially as shown and described.

The herein-described chair and bootblacking stool, consisting of a base plate or board 5, to Which is secured a back, having legs (5, the base 5 being provided at its forward edge with legs 8, and arranged at each side of the base-strips 9, and above the base a seat consisting of two parts 10 and 11, part 10 rigidly secured in place and having side plates 12 rigidly secured thereto, and the bot tom of the part 11 being hinged to the parts 10, said parts 11, having side plates 14c and a front plate 15 having an opening 16 thereoperate as set forth.
