Be it known that we, EDWIN ADAMS and VERNON P. ADAMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Box, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention aims to provide a box for general use, and. for cigars in particular, which will combine metal and wood, the latter forming a lining to the box and adapted to receive the imprint or brand and to pre vent injurious contact of thevgoods with the` metal.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any ofl the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with this invention, the cover thereof being open. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4. is a plan section. Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the manner of forming the hinge connection between the cover and the box.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference-characters.

The exterior portion of the box and cover is composed of sheet metal and the interior is formed of wood veneer. The sheet-metal body is a single blank having the corner por` tions cut away in the ordinary way and the edge portions bent about at right angles to form the sides l and the ends 2. The end portions of the sides are bent to overlap the adjacent terminal portions of the ends 2, thereby preventing the said ends from spreading. The upper edges of the ends and sides are inwardly flanged, as shown at 3, to extend over the veneer 4, so as to retain the latter in place and protect the top edges thereof. The bottom 5 is also covered with veneer 1l, whereby the interior of the box has the appearance of being constructed solely of wood, and this veneer lining is of especial advantage in packing certain kinds of goods, as cigars, since it serves to absorb a certain amount of the moisture and at the same time keeps the goods from coming in contact with the metal surface. Straps 6 form an integral part of the blank from which the box is constructed and constitute hinge members by means of which the cover has a hinge or pivotal connection with the box. A catch 7 is au integral part of the sheet-metal blank and engages with the cover to hold the latter closed.

The cover is formed of a sheetmetal blank 8, of suitable size, having its edge portions flanged, so as to embrace the sides of the box and form a close joint therewith, and a veneer 9, the latter being fitted within the bent edge portions of the sheetcnetal blank 8 and retained in place thereby. The rear edge portion of the part 8 is fold ed over the adjacent edge of the veneer 9, and slots 10 are provided n the cover adjacent to the rear edge and are intended to receive the straps 6,which latter are passed through the slots l0 and are recurved, so as to interlock therewith and form ahinge-joint between the cover and box. By folding the rear edge portion of the part S the portion entering and embraced by the straps 6 is reinforced, thereby resulting in providing a substantial hinge connection between the cover and box. located adjacent to the front edge of the cover to receive the free end of the catch 7, which latter, after passing through the opening 1l, engages with a portion of the cover to one side thereof. The front and end flanges of the cover are creased or longitudinally indented at 12 to engage with the edges of the veneer 9 and retain the latter in place.

The veneer lining the box and cover serves to strengthen them and provides for the reception of the brand or imprint, and besides absorbing moisture obviates injury to the goods by coming in contact with the metallic surface.

To prevent the corners of the box from separating and to materially strengthen the same, the end pieces 2 have extensions 13, which An opening 1l is IOO pass through slots 14, near the flanged ends of the sides 1, and which extensions are bent around the corners to attain the desired end. This construction obviates the necessity of soldering the corners to secure them together, and results in a strong and durable angular joint. These extensions 13 are located at the terminals of and are integral with the parts 2 and are bent after passing through the slots 14.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is* I 1.. A sheet-metal box having the terminals of the sides meeting, and having an end portion of one side bent to overlap the contiguous end of the adjacent side and formed with a slot at the corner between its top and bottom edges, and the ends of the sides overlapped having extensions to pass through the said slots and bent substantially as shown for the purpose described.

2. A box for the purpose described comprising a body and a cover formed of sheet metal, the sides of the box having overlapping portions at the corners and integral interlocking extensions formed at the end of one side and passing through a slot in the end of the contiguous side and bent, veneer lining the box and cover and held to the cover by creasing the flanges thereof, integral straps at a side of the box passing through slots along the hinge edge of the cover and recurved, and an integral catch at the opposite edge of the box and adapted to pass through an opening in the cover, substantially as specified.
