Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Application filed February 25, 1911. Serial No. 610,851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOBEGOTT MOLLART, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of -Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle Corner-Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and economical corner hinge for portable receptacles, the same being particularly designed to be used in connection with hinged lid shipping boxes, cases or the like.
The construction of my improved corner hinge is such that the pintle is dispensed with, the two interlocked or hinged members, when assembled and fittedtoa box or case being permanently held intact by the fastening means of the hinge member which is carried by the lid, while the hinge member of the box constitutes also a corner iron that serves to strengthen and protect the corners of the box and lid from breakage due to severe shock incidental to careless handling in shipping.
With the above objects in view, my invention consists in what is herein shown, described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of a corner of a shipping case or box provided with a hinge embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of the same, the section being in dicated by line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detached perspective view of the box member of the hinge illustrating the corner iron combination feature, and Fig; 4, a similar view of the lid member of said hinge.
Referring by characters to the drawings, 1 represents a box the walls of which are constructed from a fabric comprising vertically disposed wood slats 2 that are interlaced with transverse wire threads 3, the mouth of the box being reinforced by wood binder strips 4 that are in tongue-and-groove union at the box corners and are suitably secured to the fabric slats. The lid is con structed from a wood panel 5 reinforced at its edges by binder strips 6 that are secured thereto and in tongue-and-groove union at the corners similar to the box binder strips.
All of the above described box construction forms no part of my present invention but illustrates a particular type of packing box now in general use, to which the hinges are applied in the manufacture of said boxes.
. 7 and 8 indicate the leaves of a rectangular corner iron that constitutes the boxmember of the hinge, which member is adapted to be fitted to the ends of the box binder strips 4 about the corners of said box, the tongue-and-groove union of the strips being thus concealed and protected thereby. The corner iron leaves extend above the plane of the box mouth to form a valance or seat that is designed to protect the box-lid when the same is nested therein, the box lid being so proportioned as to have its binder-strip 6 flush with the box binder strip 4, upon which binders said lid binder strips rest.
Each leaf of the box-member of the hinge is provided with apertures for the reception of nails 9 that pass through the box binder strips together with the wall fabric whereby said leaves, box binder and fabric are secured together, the nails being clenched upon the inner face of the fabric. The upper edge of leaf 7 of this hinge-member is provided with an outwardly flared lip 10 having a pair of longitudinally disposed slots 11 therein. The lip is described upon a curve that is tangentially disposed with relation to the flat body portion of the leaf aforesaid and terminates at an approximate right angle to said body portion being thus offset to permit clearance from the walls of the box whereby union between the aforesaid hinge member and the lid hinge member is facilitated. Thus the lid when united by the hinge members to the box is capable of describing an arc movement of approximately 270 about its pintle and can thus be folded back parallel with the rear box wall.
The lid member of the hinge comprises a fiat plate 12 that is formed from a blank preferably semi-circular in shape, having a pair of fingers extending therefrom that are folded upon themselves to form U-shaped open end loops 13. The base and outer end of each loop is provided with registered apertures while the plate portion is provided with a single aperture so disposed relative to the loop apertures that they are located upon the intersecting points of a triangle.
In attaching each lid member of the hinge to the lid the open ends of the loops 13 are inserted through the slots 11 of the flared tongue 10 of the hinge member of' the box and thereafter the ends of the loop are embedded between the panel 5 of the lid and its rear binder-strip 6, the plate-port1on: lQ-be ing lapped over the upper face of the lid panel. The lid member of the hinge is then secured by nails 14 that pass through the apertures formed in this lid member andalso through the panel and lid strips, the nails being clenched upon the lower side of the strip; The position of the nail apertures in the hinge as previously stated thus constitutes a three point tie whereby the hinge member is held rigid, the nails. at the same time serving to assist in securing the lid parts together.-
From the forego ng description it will be seen that a very inexpensive, simple and durable combined corner iron and hinge is the result, which hinge can be quickly and- A corner hinge comprising aone-piece out- Gopiesof this patent'may'be Qhtainedfor'five cents each, byaddressingthm Commissioner of Patents the upper edge of the leaf portion from Y which itsprings, and a second hinge member comprising a fiat plate having a looped finger projecting therefrom for engagement with the circular tongue slot of the first named hinge member, the loop being of suflicient width relative to the tongue slot to permitstraddle of said tongue and free play of both of the finger legs within the aforesaid slot whereby swing of the looped finger hinge member about the tongue through an arc of'a circle approximating is had.
In testimony that I- claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my. hand at WVatertown in the county of J effersonand State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
