Description

(No Model M. N. SEVIER. COMBINED MEASURE AND FUNNEL.
No. 584,275. Patented June 8,1897.
llwrrnn MOSES NIMROD SEVIE'R, OF VERNON, TEXAS.
COMBINED MEASURE AND FUNNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 584,27 5, dated June 8, 1897. Application filed September 10,1896 Serial No. 605,406. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns NIMROD SEVIER, of Vernon, in the county of YVilbarger and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Measure and Funnel; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a combined measure and funnel, the same being especially designed for dealing out molasses. WVhen a funnel of ordinary form is used for passing molasses into a jug or other receptacle, the liquid adheres to the funnel interior after use, and some receptacle must be provided for supporting the same and into which the molasses may slowly drain. The funnel being open to the air collects dust, thus necessitating the washing of the funnel for the next use or using the same in soiled condition. The objections noted are designed to be overcome by the present invention, in which I provide a measure into which the funnel is adapted to fit in inverted position, thus closing the measure and excluding dust and affording the funnel free opportunity to drain thereinto. Being thus drained directly into the measure and being protected from foreign substances, the molasses thus collected is not wasted, but simply forms part of the next.
sale of the commodity.
With the objects above noted in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the combined measure and funnel. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the measure. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the funnel.
The measure A, which maybe made to hold a given quantity, is of can form and provided with handle B. Surrounding the top edge is the outwardly-flaring rim 0. Funnel D is provided upon its top end with the verticallydisposed annular flange or wall E, which fits into the top of the measure, as shown in Fig.
1, thus guiding all the drippings from the funnel directly into the measure. The extremity F of the funnel fits or laps over flaring flange C of the measure and is effectual in excluding dust therefrom. A cap G, held to the funnel by chain H, serves to close the discharge end thereof when in position upon the measure, so that dust and insects are prevented from entering at that point.
The device is extremely simple and con venient, both portions thereof being used in thedealing out ofmolasses, and in fact any fluid substance which it may be desired to handle, while at the same time the drippings are preserved entirely free from foreign substances, so that all waste is avoided.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
y 1. The combination of a vessel open at its top, and a funnel adapted to be inverted and positioned upon said vessel so as to close the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a vessel, the same being open at its upper end, a funnel, and a flange projected from the funnel which is adapted to fit the open end of the vessel when the funnel is in inverted position, thus closing the vessel, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a measure, of a funnel adapted to be used with the measure, and when not in use to be placed upon the measure in inverted position so as to entirely close the same, for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination of a measure, the flaring flange at its upper open end, the funnel having its flaring end adapted to lap over the flaring flange of the measure when the funnel is in itsinverted position, and the radial flange or wall carried by the funnel and adapted to depend into the open end of the measure, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MOSES NIMROD SEVIER.
