SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,504, dated June 1, 1897.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM MCKEEVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deer Park, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth- Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

In cleaning brass buttons upon uniforms of soldiers, policemen, firemen, and the like rotten stone or ot-her similar polishing material is employed, which is very apt to get rubbed into the cloth adjacent to the button. In any event great care has to be taken an d the cleaning of buttons is made extremely laborious. In order to overcome this trouble, I have devised a cloth-protector adapted to be applied to the cloth of uniforms adjacent to the buttons thereon, so that a brush or cloth with the polishing material may be readily and conveniently used upon the button without the danger of soiling the cloth and thereby greatly facilitating the cleaning operation.

My improved protector consists of two disks of sheet metal, preferably circular in form, pivoted together at a point near their outer edges and provided with curved slots leading from a point near the center of each to the outer edge thereof.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved protector applied to a uniform and showing the position it assumes when the button is to be cleaned. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the same, showing the two parts of the protector open just before being applied to the button. Fig. 3 is a section on Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.

In the drawings I have represented a portion of the uniform, with the cloth l of which the same is made having a button 2 applied to it. The protector 3 is made up of two disks 4 and 5, pivoted together, as shown at 6, at a point near their outer edges. The said disks have curved slots 7 8, respectively, out in them, the same extending from a point near the center to the outer edge.

In using my device the disks are opened, as shown at Fig. 2, and then placed around the button 2, with the latter fitting Within the slots 7 8, and then the two disks 4 5 closed, as shown in Figs. l and When in this position, it will be seen that the cloth l adjacent to the button 2 is completely covered, so that none of the polishing material can fall upon it and be rubbed into it.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A cloth-protector consisting of a pair of disks of sheet metal pivoted together at a point near their outer edges and provided with curved slots leading from a point near the center of each of said disks to the outer edge thereof, the upper of said disks completely covering the lower when the same are in their closed position, and both completely covering the cloth adjacent to' the point of connection of the button to which the same are applied, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
