SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,458, dated October 10, 18 99.

Application filed April 10, 1899. Serial No. 712,459. (No modem State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Self-Cleaning Ourrycombs, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention is a self-cleanin g currycomb;

and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of itsparts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of ourinvention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 on theline w 00. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the sheets forming one pair, of the combs when it is spread out. Fig. 4 is a face View of the sheet of metal, showing the comb-cleaners before it is put on the extensions hereinafter described.

Our invention is described as follows:

1 is a bowed spring-handle, preferably made of spring-wire, but may be made of any other This bowed handle 1 hassuitable material. at its rear end a spring-coil 2. This bowed handle and spring-coil consist of two pieces of wire twisted together from the coil nearly to the comb, leaving an opening 5. The lower part of the handle is then turned out at right angles to itself, forming arms 3, and then forward at right angles to the arms 3, forming extensions 4. The upper part of the bow is passed down through the opening 5, between the arms 3, and then bent out at right angles to itself, forming lower arms 6, and then forward at right angles to the arms 6, forming lower extensions 7. and then down, forming U-shaped hooks 8, which lap over the ends of the extensions 4:,

but are deep enough to allow said extensions 4 to rise and fall. When the bows 1 are pressed together, the extensions 4 and 7 open, and when the pressure on said bows is released the extensions close.

The ends are then turned up each end a tongue 10. The sides are bent down at the dotted lines 11 until they are at right angles to the back. The tongues 10 are then bent over and under the forward extensions 4, lapping in and up against the under side of the wall of the back. Thus these combs are put on without screws or rivets.

The teeth-cleaners are made of one sheet of metal 13, which is provided with slots 14, one to accommodate each blade of the comb,

and these cleaners consist of a strip of metal 12, between the slots 14, and one, 12, at each side of the comb (see Fig. 4) having their edges turned slightly down, so that when the handle is pressed together and the teeth are raised or the cleaners depressed, (which is the same,) as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, the edges of the cleaners impinge against the faces of the combs, and the combs are thus cleaned. By pressing hard on the handlev the combs may be drawn entirely through the slots, thus cleaning the combs to the ends of their teeth. The ends 15 of the plate 13 are bent overthe extensions 7 and then under and up against the lower wall of said plate. Thus said plate is secured to the said extensions'without screw's'or rivets.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1. A self-cleaning currycomb, consisting of the spring-handle 1, having the arms 3, and forward extensions 4:, its upper part passing through the opening 5, and having the lower arms 6, forward extensions 7 and U-shaped hooks 8; combs 8 consistingof plates having teeth 9, and tongues 10; said plates secured to the extensions 4', by bending said tongues over and under the same; plate 13, having cleaners 12, and provided with slots 14:, for the combs to work in, and ends 15 bent over and under forward extensions '7, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
