MATCH-RECEPTACLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,350, dated February 16, 1897. Application lod June 10, 1896. Serial No. 594,987. (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-

Beit known that I, WILLIAM OEcIL BowER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Receptacles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match receptacles and lighters, and especially to an article of this character in which the matches are adapted to be held in separate perforations in the top plate of the holder and the head of the match to lbe pressed against a rasping-surface about the wall of the perforation in which the match is held, so that when the latter is withdrawn the head thereof is caused to be ignited.

A further purpose of Iny invention is to improve upon the construction of match-receptacle and automatic lighter upon which I have been allowed a patent, Serial N o. 565,37 9, in which allowed patent I provide a means for holding the matches in a holder, and so arranged that the head of the match will be ignited as it is withdrawn from the receptacle and between a rasping-strip held across the top thereof.

A further part of my invention resides in the provision of a series of spring-plates, there being provided as many as there are rows of perforations in the top of the receptacle, and a spring-arm from each of said plates designed to rest in one of the perforations and to hold the match snugly against the wall of the perforation, for the purpose which will hereinafter appear.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination,

and adaptation of the parts, as will hereinafter be described, and then specifically dened in the appended claim.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompan yin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specication, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved matclI-receptacle. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the springplates adapted to hold the matches in place.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the receptacle, which is made, preferably, of metal, and is provided with a series of elongated perforations B, extending through the upright solid portion of the receptacle. The walls of these perforations are corrugated, as seen at B', so as to form a rasping-surface against which the match held in the perforation is forced to ignite the same. Secured near the bottoms of each row of said perforations is a plate C, having spring-arms C', one of the said arms being held in each perforation, with its free end bearing against the side wall of the perforation, as seen in the sectional view in the drawings. The said springplate arms being secured in place, the matches are inserted in the perforations from the under side of the receptacle, with their heads down and their other ends eXtendin g up through the upper ends of the perforations a sufficient distance, so that a person can secure a hold of the match. The spring-arms hold the matches securely against the side Walls of the perforations, and when a match is withdrawn the head thereof is ignited as it passes by the rasping-surface, as it will be observed that the end of each spring-arm C extends the entire length of the perforation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A match holder and igniter, comprising a solid metallic block having a series of verti- @al elongated perforations therein, the Walls of each perforation roughened,co1nbined with the plates C, having a series of integral springarins C, one of each being designed to rest in each perforation, with its upper portion resting against the said roughened surface, between which and the spring the match is designed to be heid, substantially as shown and described. 1o
