SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 575,897, dated January 26, 1897. Application filed August 8, 1896. Serial No. 602,170- (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. LEWIS, of the city of Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented certain Improvements in Sample-Exhibiting Attachments for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

In the description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the ac companying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of an ordinary pasteboard boxand the sample-exhibiting attachment which is applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a modified con struction of the invention, hereinafter described.

Referring now to the drawings, A is an ordinary pasteboard box, such as is commonly used by shoe-dealers for shoes, and B its lid.

Thesample-exhibiting device in its simplest form is shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and it consists of the base a and the inclined sample-holder b, which are hinged together at c, the hinged flap cl, and the suspensory hook f.

The flap is attached to the lid B of the box by means of a tack g, and the hinges which unite the three integral parts of the device are formed by merely cutting the material of the device about half through its substance, as shown. The suspensory hook consists in the present case of an ordinary sheet-metal paper-fastener, as shown, but the construction of this device will in all cases be governed by the character of the goods to be exhibited.

The hinge at h will admit of the box-lid. being raised for the purpose of giving access to the box, as shown by its dotted delineation in Fig. 2.

Vhen the invention is used in connection with a shoe-box, one shoe of the pair-is kept in the box and the other hung on the hook f.

It will generally be found necessary to secure the base to the bottom of the box, as the sample-holder, if properly made, will preserve its shape, but the inclined sample-holder is preferably attached to the base by an elastic band j by means of buttons 70.

In Figs. 3 and 4, which represent, respectively, a side View of the lower portion of the sample-holder and the base and a cross-section of the holder, cardboard or pasteboard is used as the material from which the device is made, and the inclined holder thereof is stifiened by a covering an of tin-plate.
