Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PAPER.
-wpeciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,192, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. RUSSELL, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improved lvIanufacture ot' Paper, to be used for the fabrication of paper collars, for cards, either plain or printed, and for any purpose for which the paper, when manufactured, may be used; and I do hereby declarethe same to be fully described in thefollowing specification, and represented in the accompanying' drawing, which exhibits a section of a sheet'ot paper as made with superficial and body layers in accordance with my improvement.
In carrying out my invention I apply to a web or body of a coarse, cheap, and strong paper, such as is usually made from Manila hemp, Manila rope, Sisal grass, jute, or gunnybagging, either in its natural color or bleached, two superficial layers of paper, such as is usually made from linen or cotton, or a mixture ot' the two, of a finer and whiter character than the body of the sheet, and I make the application ofthe superficial web to the opposite sides of the body of the web when these are in a plastic or adhesive state-that is, such a state as will enable them, when run together between rollers, to be compressed and brought into one sheet by the pressure of such rollers. The three webs are to be run between the rollers and are to be compressed together by them, so as to make but one sheet. The superficial layers are to enable the surface of the paper to take a high lnish or gloss, and to be written or printed onor stamped, or glazed, or embossed Without the body layer being visible.
In the drawing' a represents the body sheet, and b b the supercial or finer sheets.
Paper of this kind may be made by handpressure or by a three-cylinder paper-making machine, in which case there would have to be a separate vat for the pulp for the production of the body ofthe sheet.
I am aware that it is not new to run together and between rollers two or more sheets of paper ot' the same quality or material or composition. Therefore I do not claim such.
What I claim as my invention is- The improved fabric or manufacture of paper as composed of a coarse, stronger, and more opaque material (such as Manila hemp or Manila rope, Sisal grass, jute, or gunny-bagging) and two superficial or finishing layers ot' a ner and whiter material, (such as linen or cotton, or a mixture of both,) applied, arranged, and combined together under 'circumstances and in manner as hereinbefore explained.
WILLIAM A. RUSSELL.
