WASHBOARD.
No. 571,574. Patented Nov. 17? 1896.

shielded in front and on the sides from the UNITED STATES NATHANIEL S. MONROE,
WASHB OF ARCOIJA, ILLINOIS.
OARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,574, dated November 17, 1896.
Application filed January 14, 1 89 5.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL S. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arcola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVashboard-Guards, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washboard in operative position provided with my improved guard; and Fig. 2, a detail view of a sheet-metal blank, showing the initial form of the guard.
My invention relates to improvements in washboards; and its object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient splashboard or guard, whereby operatives may be splashing suds which are liable to be thrown in all directions during the washing process.
The device will be easily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which A designates a washboard of the usual form.
The guard is preferably made of suitable sheet metal, which is first cut out in the form shown in Fig. 2, comprising the rectangular cent-ralportion C and the end wings B and slits a,formed at each corner of said central portion. The rounded ends or wing-sections B are then bent approximately at right angles to the central portion 0 and the edges of the latter bent outwardly at an angle thereto, forming Serial No. 53%889. (No model.)
ledges a, and the wings pivotally connected 35 with the washboard. The ends of said outwardly-turned edges of the portion C rest upon the sides of the washboard and supportthe guard. The ledges o serve as soapholders.
It will be observed that if the guard be applied to a two-sided washboard it may be readily reversed by a half-rotation on the pivot and that its position in relation to the board will be unchanged.
It is not necessary that the guard be in combination with the washboard when sold, as the blanks may be bent into the finished form by the operator and applied to any washboard, a large tack .or small nail suiticing to properly pivot the device in place.
What I claim as new is- As an improved article a sheet-metal washboard-guard and soap-holder consisting of the rectangular central portion, the end wings bent at right angles thereto, and formed with pivot-holes, and the edges of said central portions bent outwardly forming ledges, all made integral, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 4th day of January, 1895, in the presence of witnesses.
NATHANIEL S. MONROE.
