I'. H. WENDT. FOLDING MACHINE.
No. 570,581. Patented Nov. 3,1896.'
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK H. WENDT, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN OR TO THE BROWN FOLDING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 570,581, dated November 3, 1896.
Application filed November 30, 1895. Serial No. 570,692. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, FREDRICK H. WENDT, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to folding-machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby paper may, if desired, be passed through the machine without making the first fold.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure l shows a perspective view of a machine with the improvements thereon. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the same machine, parts being broken away to better show construction.
Amarks the frame of the machine; B B, the rst fold-rolls; C, the rst fold-starter; D D', the top boards; G, the usual side guide, and I the second fold-roll.
The frame is provided at a point under the board D with the bracket a, having notches a therein, into which is adapted to fit the supporting-rod d of the front end of the tableboard. Thel roll end of the board D is supported by a cross-piece d,resting on the frame.
When it is desired to make a first fold, the board D is placed with the supporting-rod in the notch a nearer the rolls. This brings the board at the proper distance from the fold-line and the board D' to make the fold properly.
Wh en it is desired to pass the paper through the first rolls without folding, the board D is set back into the outer notch. A guide-knee E, with the slight shoulder e and curved receding under part e', is secured to the edge of the board D. A stop F, provided witha slot j" and thumb-screw f, is placed-on the board D and adjusted to the width of the paper, so that the edges of the paper will rest on the shoulder e and against the stop F, as shown by the paper H in Fig. l.
By this construction there is suicient space between the shoulders e and the fold-line to allow the paper to bend under the starter o the shoulders, and there is sufficient distance between the edge of the boardD and the foldline that the overhang of the paper will be long enough to reach to the rolls, so as to be readily started.
1. In a folding-machine, the combination with the frame; the iirst fold-rolls and the starter therefor; of a top board at one side of said rolls for supporting the paper to be folded immediately at the folding-rolls; and means of adjusting said board at different distances .from the fold-line of said rolls to change the overhang of the paper for the purposes set forth.
2. In a folding-machine, the combination with the frame; the first fold-rolls; and the starter therefor; of the top board D; a sup'- port at the roll end thereof; the notched bracket o; and the supporting-rod d adapted to enter the notches in said bracket for the purposes set forth.
3. In a folding-machine, the combination with the frame; the rst fold-rolls; and the starter therefor; of the top board at one side of said rolls; and the shouldered knee-pieces secured to said board for the purposes set forth.
4. In a folding-machine, the combination with the frame; the iirst fold-rolls; and the starter therefor; ofthe top board at one side of said rolls; the shouldered knee-pieces E attached to said top board and having the receding under part e thereon.
5. In a folding-machine, the combination with the frame; the iirst fold-rolls; andthe starter therefor; of the top boards at the sides of the rolls; the shouldered knee-pieces attached to one of said boards; and theadjustable stop attached to the opposite board for the purposes set forth.
6. In a folding-machine, the combination with the frame; the first fold-rolls; aud the starter therefor; of the top board D; the shouldered knee-pieces attached to said board; and the adjustable top board D.
'7. 111 a folding-machine, the combination With the frame; the rst fold-rolls; and the starter therefor; of the top board D; the shouldered knee-pieces attached to the top board D; the adjustable top board D; and the adjustable stop F on the top board D. xo
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
