ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,380, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed April 26, 1 895.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER McLxEEx OHALMERS, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved envelop which can be securely sealed and is arranged to permit the receiver to conveniently open the envelop without injuring the contents.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear face view of the blank for forming the envelop. Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views illustrating the steps to be taken for forming the envelop. Fig. 4 is a rear face view of the sealed envelop. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section of part of the improvement on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a like view of the same, illustrating the opening of the sealed envelop; and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of a modification.
The envelopblank, as illustrated in Fig. 1, is cut out so as to form the front A, the bottom flap B, the side flaps O O, and the top or closing flap D. The bottom flap B is provided with extensions B and B terminating a suitable distance from the apex B of the triangular bottom fiap B, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 1. The creases or joints B between the back flap B and the extensions B and B are preferably perforated, and the rear faces of the said extensions are gummed.
The side flaps O and O are provided with extensions G and 0 respectively, each connected by a crease O with its corresponding side flap, and the front face of each extension 0 is gummed, as indicated on flap C in Fig. 2. The upper flap D is provided 011 its rear faces with the gummed surfaces D and in the apex end is formed with a slot D preferably curved and terminating in short rows of perforations D running to the outer edges of the said flap, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1.

operator first folds the side flap C onto the rear face of the front A, then folds the side flap C in a like mannerinward, and then both extensions 0 O are folded over, as indicated in Fig. The bottom flap B is then folded up over the flaps O C, so that the wetted gummed surfaces of the extensions 0 C fas ten to the bottom flap B next to the extensions B B as shown in Fig. 5, and the wet ted gummed surfaces of the extensions B B fasten onto the outer faces of the flaps O O, as indicated in Fig. The envelop is now finished and ready to receive mail or other matter. hen the envelop is filled with the desired contents, then the closing or top flap D is brought down and its wetted gummed surfaces D will fasten the flap D at its apex to the ungummed apex B of the bottom fiap B and its sides to the side flaps O C.
Now it will be seen by reference to Fig. et that the rows of perforations D stand in alinement with the creases B of the extensions B of the bottom fiap B. In order to open the envelop, the receiver first inserts his thumb nail into the slit D and under the points of the extension-flaps C C and the point when by pulling upon the said parts the point D of the fiap will be severed from the flap along the line of perforations D thereby permitting the said parts to be raised up so that the operator can get hold of the same with the thumb and forefinger. The operator now pulls upon the said parts, when the extensions O U B B will be severed from their flaps along the creases or rows of perforations and the envelop opened, the extensions 0 0 adhering to the flap B and the extensions B to the fiaps O C.
Instead of the thumb-nail a suitable tool may be passed into the slit D to open the point.
If desired, the extensions 0 O can be reinforced to form a strong tearing-flap when opening the envelop, and for this purpose the extensions are each provided with a second extension connected by an ordinary crease with the extension 0 or 0 as shown in Fig. 7. The second extensions are gummed on both sides and adhere to the extensions 0 G and the bottom fiap B next to the extensions B 13*, respectively.
It will be seen that by the construction de- ICO scribed the envelop can be readily formed, filled with mail-matter, and closed, so as to produce extension-flanges on the back of the envelop, which flanges are adapted to be taken hold of by the receiver to conveniently tear the envelop open without danger of injuring the contents of the envelop.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An envelop provided with extensions on three of its flaps, the extensions on the opposite flaps being folded thereon and guinined on their front faces, and the extensions of the other flap being guinmed on their rear faces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An envelop provided with two extensions on its bottom flap said extensions terminating short of the apex of the flap and an extension on each side flap, the extensions of the side flaps being folded upon said flaps and guinmed on their front faces, and the extensions of the bottom flap being guniined on their inner faces, substantially as shown and. described.
An envelop having its top llap slotted at its apex and provided with two extensions on its bottom flap and an extension on each of its side flaps, the extensions of the side flaps being folded on said flaps and gunnned on their front faces, and the extensions of the bottom flap being guinmed on their inner faces, substantially as herein shown and described.

An envelop provided with a bottom flap having gumnied extensions and united with the said bottom flap by creases, side flaps each provided with a guinlned extension united with its flap by a crease the said extensions being provided with a second extension gunnned at its front face and united by a crease with the other extension, substantially as shown and described.
