SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,767, dated October 20, 1896.

To all whom it ntay concern.-

Be it known that I, EVELYN MELVILLE QUEREAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peekskill, in the county of Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac-' companying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to fastening devices, and particularly to that class thereof known as hooks and eyes; and the object of the invention is to provide a fastening device consisting of two separate parts, each of which comprises a hook and an eye, said parts being connected in practice by uniting the hook of one part with the eye of the other.

In my improvement, as above stated, each part of the fastening device comprises a hook and an eye, and the hook is in direct line with the eye or in the same plane therewith, and each part is exactly the same in form and construction; and in practice said parts are reversible, and they are connected with the adjoining edges of agarment in the usual manner.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which Figure 1 is aplan view of the separate parts of my improved fastening device united, and Fig. 52 an end View thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device consisting of two separate parts, each of which is of the same general form and each of which is preferably composed of spring-wire which is bent to form an eye A, a loop B, and a hook C, which is in the same plane with the eye A, and the eye A and the hook O are united by means of the central curved portion or loop B, and at the outer end of the eye A is a small ring or eyelet a, and the side of the hook C, and opposite thereof, is provided with a similar ring or eyelet a", by means of which the device is connected with the garment bystitching or otherwise. These devices are connected with the opposite edges ofthe garment, as shown .in Fig. l, or in the position shown in Fig. 1,

in which position the eye A of one part is opposite the hook C of the other, and when in this position it will be seen that the hook of one part maybe easily and quickly connected with the eye of the other, and I thusprovide a combination hook and eye which obviates the necessity for reversing the hooks and eyes on garments or alternating the arrangement thereof, which is now frequently practiced. It will also be apparent that by means of this arrangement or construction the accidental disconnection of the fastening device of a garment will be rendered almost impossible, and by having a hook and eye formed together and adapted to operate in connection with a corresponding hook and eye it will be apparent that much time and labor may be saved in the process of connecting the device or devices with a garment.

My improved fastening device is also simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and it may be composed of springwire, as hereinbefore described, or of any desired metal, and it is evident that changes in the form of the separate parts and in the method of connecting the same with a garment may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a fastening device, substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of two similar parts composed of spring-wire and bent to form an eye A, and a hook 0, both of which are in the same plane, said eye and hook being united by means of a central curved portion or loop B, and at the outer end of said eye is formed a ring or eyelet a, and the side of the loop 0, being provided with an eyelet a', by means of which eyelets the device is connected with the garment whereby, an accidental disengagement of the parts is prevented when at right angles to each other, as set forth.
