MOUTH SHIELD.
No. 566,730. Patented-Aug. 25,- 1896;
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR MCCULLEN, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
MOUTH-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,730, dated August 25, 1896. Application filed March 18, 1896. Serial No, 588,845. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR MCGULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicyclers Lung and Throat Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to aremovable mouthshield for the use of bicycle-riders to prevent the ingress of cold air and dust and thereby protect the throat while riding, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bicycle-rider mounted and wearing my shield. Fi g. 2 is a perspective view of the shield complete; and Fig. i, a similar view of the frame, the mouth-flap being removed.
The device is constructed preferably of a single piece of spring-wire, formed about midway its length into a coil-spring a, and from the ends of this spring the two end portions of the wire are bent backward to form the arms 1), these arms being curved down at their ends to hook over the ears of the wearer in the manner of spectacles. On the coil to is secured a dependent imperforate flap c, of a suitable flexible material, this flap being secured to the coil by having its upper end formed into a tube to overlap the same, the flap being thereby free to be adjusted on the coil and the coil being covered and protected. In use the tubular portion of the flap rests on the upper lip, just under the nose, and the flap hangs down in front of the mouth and shields the same from cold air, dust, 82c. coil-spring and flexible flap permit the device to flex sufficiently to conform to the curvature of the face and prevent injury to the same, and also enable the device to be folded for convenience in carrying in the pocket.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A mouth-shield for bicyclers, consisting of a coiled spring a, adapted to bear upon the lip under the nose and to flex sufficiently to conform to the lip, a depending mouth-flap carried by said coil, and securing means connected to the respective ends of the coil and adapted to engage the ears of the wearer, substantially as described.
2. A mouth-shield for bicyclers, consisting of a coiled spring adapted to flex, spring-arms connected to the respective ends of the coil and adapted to engage the ears of the wearer, and an imperforate mouth-flap of flexible material depending from said coil, this flap having a tube formed in its upper end which embraces and protects the coil and prevents the coil coming in contact with the face of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR MGCULLEN.
