UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
AARON M. WEBER, OF OSI-IKOSH, WISCONSIN.
SKIRT-BINDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,992, dated June 30, 1896.
Application led November 2, 1895. Serial No. 567,701. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON M. WEBER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the countyof Vinnebago and State of Wiscousin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Waterproof Skirt-Bindin gs, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in skirt-bindings. Heretofore it has been customary to use either rubber, leather, or velvet strips for this purpose, it being deemed necessary to use a class of goods which would neither shrink nor stretch; but these materials are objectionable, as they do not match the dress-goods and tend to render the bottom of the dress unsightly. On the other hand, the bindings of durable material, which can be made to match the dress-goods, have hitherto been considered unserviceable, owing to the fact that such materials either stretch or shrink with use and draw the hem of the dress out of shape.
The object of my invention is to provide a durable form of skirt-binding, which can be prepared and sold as an article of manufacture to match the various styles of dress-goods, and which will not stretch or shrink with use so as to distort the hem of the dress.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a section of my improved skirt-binding, viewed from the side of its attachment to the dress. Fig. 2 is a reverse view showing the folded strip of faced rubber cloth and the strip of tape projecting therefrom. Fig. 3 is a cross-section View of the binding. Fig. 4 is a cross-section view drawn on the line X X of Fig. 3.
Like parts are identiiied by the same refero ence-letters throughout the several views.
In the construction of my improved skirtbinding, I have provided a strip of doubletexture rubber cloth a, faced with dress-goods B and folded longitudinally, with a strip of tape c inserted between the folds, and held therein by one or more lines of stitching, which may also secure the strips a and c to the velvet facing d. By this construction, I am enabled to use the rubber cloth, which can be readily made up in strips, with facing to match any kind of dress-goods, while the tape, inserted between the folds, prevents the cloth from stretching, land the velvet strip provides appropriate means for attaching the binding to the dress.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A skirt-binding,comprising a strip of dressgoods covered on one face with waterproof material, said strip being folded longitudinally to bring the waterproof material to the inner side, and a non-elastic reinforcing-tape secured between the edges of the strip to prevent stretchng thereof, and an attaching strip or facing secured to one of the outer faces of said folded strip, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AARON ivLwEBEE.
