To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that 1, JOHN J. HOFFMAN, of Glen Cove, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Casings for Packages, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in casings for packages, and more particularly to paper boxes such as are commonly employed in packing various articles of food.

The object is to provide the boxes or package with an adjustable gate for opening and closing the package at pleasure to remove a portion of the contents thereof as it may be desired for use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective a box or package, showing the handle or stem of the gate projecting through its side and the position of the gate in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial transverse section through the gate and the opening which the gate is intended to open and close; and Fig. 3 is a View of the blank from which the paper box provided with the gate may be constructed, the gate being represented in position in connection therewith.

The body of the box or package is denoted by A and is formed in the present instance of a single sheet of suitable flexible materialsuch, for example, as pasteboarcL-the meeting edges of which are made to overlap a distance somewhat greater than the width of the gate which is to be applied to the package. For convenience in operating it it is provided with a stem 1), the extremity of which is made to project through a slit in the side of the box or package, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. The body portion of the gate B is located between the overlapping edges 0. and a, the said edges being secured together upon opposite sides of the gate B, so as to form a complete housing for the gate, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The gate and its operating-handle b may be entirely concealed, if desired, by a facing, also of paper, applied to the outside of the box, the position of the gate and its handle being so indicated that the purchaser may readily disclose them for use when it is desired to remove any part of the contents of the package.

In operation the gate may be raised by pulling upwardly on the handle Z), thereby leaving the contents of the package exposed through the registering openings at and a WVhen such a part of the contents has been removed as desired, the gate may be again closed in the position indicated in Fig. 1 and the package set aside for future use, the contents of the package being completely shielded from exposure.

What I claim is-- The combination with the overlapping edges of the body of the box or package, of a gate inserted between the overlapping edges in position to open and close access to the interior of the box or package, substantially as set forth.
