INVENTOR WITNESSES ANDREW B GRAHAM pnoremmwasumevuu DC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILIJAM RUSSELL KROMER, OF ASHLAND, iVISC-ONSIN.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,719, dated May 5, 1896.
Application filed February 24, 1896. Serial No. 580,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RussELL KROMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a case or holder for lead-pencils adapted to be carried in the vest or coat pocket of the user ready for convenient use and to be removably attached to the pocket. IIeretofore a great Variety of constructions of clasps, cases, and holders for this purpose have been used, but many forms of metal clasps or holders have been found objectionable because of their expense or insecurity. Leather cases or holders have also been defective, for the reason that the sharp points of the pencils, unless protected by a removable cap of some kind, will soon out the threads which secure the case together.
My invention consists in a simple, inexpensive, and durable leather case for pencils, provided with a bearing-surface for the pencil-points between its front and rear sections and so arranged with relation to the stitching of the case as to effectually protect the stitching from abrasion by contact with said sharpened points.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved pencil-case. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. tive view with a portion of the front section of the case raised to show the inner packing or hearing strip, and Fig. at is a central vertical sectional View.
The reference- numerals 1 and 2 indicate two strips of leather or equivalent material of substantially oval form, the strip 1, preferably made up of two layers of leather, con- Fig. 3 is a perspec stituting the back and the strip 2 the front of the case. The two strips are stitched around their meeting edges, except at the top 3 of the front section 2, which is cut transversely, so that it is shorter than the strip 1, to form the top flap 4. The two sections 1 and 2 are also stitched together longitudinally to divide separate compartments 5, 6, and '7, as shown.
Between the lower edges of the sections 1 and 2 I interpose a strip 8 of any suitable material. This strip is curved to conform to the shape of the case, and it is secured by the stitches which unite the lower edges of the sections 1 and 2. This strip 8 constitutes a bearin -surface for the points of the pencils and prevents the contact of said sharpened points with the stitching of the case. The bearing-strip is also held by the lower ends of the longitudinal rows of stitching. On the back of the section 1 I provide a loop 9, to which any suitable securing-pin 10 may be attached.
It will be apparent that I thus provide an inexpensive and convenient pencil-holder adapted to be carried in the pocket without liability of abrading or wearing the stitching, and which serves to protect the sharpened points of the pencils, as an unobstructed yielding bearing-surface therefor is provided.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- A pencil-case comprising a back section, 2, and a front section, 1, of leather or similar material, stitched together by edge and longitudinal stitches as described, in combination with a bearing-strip, 8, interposed between the lower edges of the sections, 1 and 2, and secured by the stitches which secure the sections, and so arranged as to present a yielding bearin g-surface for the pen oil-points substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM RUSSELL KROMER.
