UNITED STATES ATENT LOUIS A. NEGRAVAIJ, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW' JERSEY.
PENCIL ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of v Letters Patent No. 426,950, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed February 13, 1890. Serial No. 340,341. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs A. NEGRAVAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pencil'Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The main body of my attachment is an elastic tube of thin metal with a joint open, and provided with a hook by which it maybe eugaged with the rim of a vest-pocket in being transported when not in use. I fit upon one end of this a shorter tube or ring of peculiar section. It is of a form adapted to hold a piece of rubber between it and the inner tube properly conditioned to serve as an eraser.
The accompanying drawings form part of this specification, and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, a view quartering thereto; Fig. 3, an end view, and Fig. 4 shows a slightlymodified construction fitted on the mid-length of a pencil ready to be inserted in a pocket.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures where they occur.
A is the main tube, and a the open joint therein.
A is a hook, the material of which is cut from the tube A and bent in the, proper form by hand or by machinery.
B B is the exterior ring, aportion of which matches closely to the tube A, and another portion B is adapted to inclose a properlyformed piece of rubber.
O is the rubber, a portion of which is compressed between the part B of the outer ring and the adjacent surface of the tube A.
The pencil is marked M.
My attachment fits tightly on a pencil of ordinary size, its elasticity allowing it to apply on a considerable range of sizes. It can be moved endwise on the pencil. WVhen it is adjusted to project beyond the point, it is a point-protector. as an eraser, it will usually be set on the end of the pencil opposite to the point. WVhen the pencil is to be set in the pocket, the attachment should be adjusted near the midlength. The pencil is inserted in the pocket point downward and with the hook A engaged on the rim or edge of thepocket. The attachment should he slid down to such position that the point of the pencil shall reach down nearly or quite to the bottom of the pocket. tube A to facilitate exchanging or readjusting the eraser in the attachment.
Modifications may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of the invention. Instead of cutting the hook A from the material of the spring-tube A, it can be made from a separate piece of similar or different material and attached to the spring-tube by solderin Fig. 4 shows such a construction.
I claim as my invention The pencil attachment described, composed of the spring-tube A and hook A, in combination with the shorter tube or ring B B, having diametrical enlargement adapted to hold and serve with the rubber eraser C, and pencil M, whereby the shorter tube may be adjusted lengthwise 011 the tube A without displacing the rubber eraser, substantially as herein specified.
In testimonywhereof I have hereunto set my hand, at New York city, in the county and State of New York, this 10th day of February, 1890, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS A. NEGRAVAL.
