LEVI C. HAY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'lO AMERICAN TYPE FOUNDERS COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PRINTERS INK-KNIFE.
Application filed July 12, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI C. HAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Ink-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to provide an improved form of instrument, which I have termed an ink knife, designed especially for the use of printers in transferring printing ink from the containers, such as tubes or cans, to the printing press fountains, or vice versa, in a neat and rapid manner, so as to avoid smearing the ink upon the surrounding articles or the person of the operator, the invention consisting chiefly in the particular form of the instrument whereby such work may be accomplished in a most expeditious, convenient and economical manner, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a plan view of a printers ink knife embodying my said invention, Fig. 2 an elevation of one edge thereof, and Fig. 3 an elevation of the other edge thereof.
Said knife consists of a blade A having a handle B. The blade A is of metal, preferably a good quality of steel and of a form best shown in the drawings, being wide at its outer end and formed with a comparatively narrow shank a to which the handle parts B are riveted. Between said shank a and the main part of the blade A is formed an angular off-set 10, and from said off-set the blade preferably tapers from a thickness which will afford substantial rigidity adjacent to the handle to a comparatively thin and flexible outer end. The front end of the blade is formed straight but on an angle of substantially 23 with a longitudinal line running through the center of the instrument, said angle running outwardly from the inner corner 11 to the outer cor- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Serial No. 778,661.
ner 12 and formed with a thin knife edge as shown.
In use the operator is enabled by reason of the ofi-set 10 to run the knife into the ink container without bringing the hand into contact with such container, and the wide outer end afiords a comparatively large carrying surface, while the tapered front end with knife edge enables the user to remove practically all of the printing ink from the container, or from the fountain blade, quickly and with little eflort, leaving said parts practically clean and enabling the work to be done very conveniently and with great economy both of time and material.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A printers ink knife comprising a blade and a handle, the handle and blade being off-set in relation to each other by an angle and said blade being formed increasing in width and decreasing in thick ness from said off-set angle to its outer end, and said outer end being formed straight and extending at an oblique angle, substantially as set forth.
2. A printers ink knife comprising a blade and a handle ofl-set in relation to each other by an oblique angle, said blade being formed of resilient metal and of decreasing thickness from the angle toward its outer end and with its opposite side edges straight, one side being of greater length than the other, and the point of the blade being formed with a thin edge and straight from the point of one edge to the point of the other edge, whereby it is formed at an oblique angle, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Jersey City, New J ersey this 11th day of July, A. D. nineteen hundred and thirteen.
