IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,769, dated June 19,1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORG-E 1V. GOLAY, ot' Vevay, Switzerland county, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this specification.

My invention relates to the class of brooms in which the straw can be replaced when worn and it consists ofadj ustable clamps adapted to act in conjunction with the brooln-handle for holding and clamping the straws, and ot' so light a construction that but little more than one ounce is added to the weight ofthe straws and handle by the attachment ot' the clamps.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 exhibits a portion ot the details.

A is the handle ofthe broom, provided with slots a a. B C are clamps for holding and tightly securing the straws of the broom, the

clampB pressing the ends of the straws tightly to the handle, and O securing the straws at about the mid-length and in their more expanded form.

The clamp B is composed ot double strap B and single-racked strap B, capable, by the provision of thejoint b, of expanding for the reception ofthe straw, as seen in Fig. 2. When closed the strap Bl isinclosedwithin the double strap B', and presents an elliptical form, as seen in Fig. 1. To the double strap B a loop, D, is attached by swivel-joint at d., and to the same joint a pawl, E, is hinged, which, by falling into the notches ot' the strap B, serves to retain the clamp in any desired position. The clamp is closed and the straw tightened by the use of the leverF, the end of which ts into the notches of the strap B, and the loop D, through which it passes, serves as the f'ulcrum. The pawl E serves to hold the clamp in place as it is drawn forward and closed by successive gripes ot' the lever F. It is obvious that the clamp can be closed and the straws of the broom tightened at any time during use.

The clamp O is composed of parts C', C", and c, the part O sliding within the part C', as shown, and the whole passing through the link c. This clamp is connected to the handle A by passing the link c through either of the slots a a', and is designed merely to keep the straws well together at their mid-length and term a connection at that point with the broomhandle. By simply sliding the parts together, one within the other, the dimensions otA the broom at this point can be contracted or expanded at will.

It will be seen that by the peculiar construction given to the clamps B G the broom need be but little heavier (say one and onchalt` ounce) than an ordinary broom in which the straws are permanent.

' I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. The hinged clamp B, composed ot' parts B B, loop D and pawl E, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specilied.

2. In combination with the above, the sliding clamp C, composed ot' parts C G and link c, as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
