CHIN-SUPPORT FOR DEAD PERSONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed June 18, 1914. Serial 0. 845,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. GILBAUGH,
a citizen of the United States, and a-resi-- death, in order to avoid the face assuming an unnatural appearance. To this end, I have invented a simple support readily affixed on the head of a deceased person, and so arranged and adapted that it will not slip out of place. I furthermore make the band of my supportof two members of resilient material, said members being fastened to gether at their inner ends by means permitting the band to be lengthened and shortened so that my device can be used on different profiles; and I also prefer to make the members of the band articulated, that is to say, of sections hinged together, so that my support may be folded into a compact convenient form when not being used.
The details of construction of my device are hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, showing it as used in actual practice; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device as it appears when not in use; Fig. 3 is a left-end elevation of Fig. 2; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of construction; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modified construction.
In the device shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a represents one member of the band of my support. This member is provided with a cupped chin plate a, the edge of which is preferably slightly rolled, as at (L to prevent possible marking of the chin. At the inner end of the member a is a longitudinal slot, a made with enlarged circular portions, a Furthermore, the member, a, has its end upturned, as at a The other member of the band is represented by b. This member is provided at its outer end with lateral arms 7), the extremities of which are turned down and formed with tooth-lil e projections, 6 On the inner end of the 5 member 6, and on the center line thereof, is
a stud Z2 and a transverse bar member 6 The stud is of such diameter as to fit the circular enlargements a, and the transverse bar 6 has a width slightly less and a length slightly greater than the slot a In assembling my device, the section b is placed in transverse relationship to the member, a, so that the bar, 6 may enter the slot 0 The two sections are relatively rotated, until the stud b is broughtinto alinement with one of the circular enlargements,
w of the slot (1 whereupon the resilient qualities of the sections will cause the stud to spring into such circular enlargement.
To adjust the length of the device, the end of the section, a, is sprung outwardly by the thumb, being thrust under the upturned end a of the member, a, (see broken lines of Fig. 2) and the two sections may be displaced longitudinally until the stud b registers with another of the circular enlargements of the slot a thereupon said stud will spring into the enlargements and lock the band members against further longitudinal movement.
The use of my device will be readily seen by having reference to Fig. 1. The chin plate a is placed under the chin of the person, and the lateral arm 6 of the member I) placed on the top of the head. The serrated edges 6 will then grip the head and give the two points of support necessary to insure the required rigidity in the device, so
that the support will not slip out of place. The curve of the resilient tensioned mem- 1 bers will entirely clear the features and hold the chin firmly up in natural position until the muscles have set, when the support is to be removed.
In Fig. l I have shown my support as provided with hinges a, 79, which allow my support to be folded together, as shown by' over each other, for lengthening and shortening the band; the extremities of one memher being provided with lateral portions for bearing onthe top of the head, and the extremity of the other member being made with a plate for bearing on the chin.
3. A device of the character specified comprising a band made of two articulated resilient :members; means holding the inner,
ends-oi said members in sliding engagement with each other, other means for locking said ends together as adjusted; the extremities of one member being provided with lateral portions for bearing on the top of the head, the extremities of said portions being made; with tooth-like projections and the extremity ofthe other member being made with a plate for bearing on the chin.
4. A device of the character specified com- I prising a band made of two members; the
Copies of this patent may be obtained for inner end of one band being made with longitudinal slots having enlargements spaced apart; the companion inner end of the other member being made with a stud fitting said enlargements of-said slots," and also having 7 a transverse bar adapted for passing through the slot when longitudinally alined therewith.
5. A device of the character specified comprising a band made of two members; the inner end of one band being made with longitudinal slots, having other member being made with a stud fitting the enlargementsof said slots, and also having a transverse 'bar adapted for passing through the slot when longitudinally alined enlargements 40 spaced apart, the 'companlon nner end of the therewith; the extremities of one member being provided with lateral portions for hearing on the top ofthe head, the 9X5 tremities of said lateral portions being made with tooth-like projections, and the extremity of the other member being made with a plate for bearing on the chin. V JOHN H; GILBAUGH.
