DIAMOND-SETTING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,871, dated February 18, 1896.

an interior thick layer of platinum is combined with an exterior thinner layer of gold,

such settings being preferred by setters because they bring out the brilliancy and sparkle of the diamond; and the invention consists of a diamond-setting composed of an interior thick layer of platinum and an exterior thinner layer of gold, said outer layer extending at the base up to the edge of the inner layer of'platinum so as to cover the same and prevent any platinum being seen at the under side of the setting.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 1, 2 and 2, and 3 and 3 represent top views, side views and vertical central sections of blanks of the different layers from which ordinary diamond-settings with platinum are made. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section through a setting of this class. Figs. 5 and 5, 6 and 6, and '7 and 7 a are like top views, side views, and sections of the blanks used for my improved diamond-setting, and Fig. 8 is a vertical central section of my improved setting.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the thick interior layer of platinum, and B the thinner exterior layer of gold, of my improved diamond-setting. The exterior layer, B, is extended to the edge of the interior layer, A, of platinum so as to cover this entirely and prevent any platinum from being seen at the under side of the same. In the manufacture of diamond-settings as heretofore practiced with interior platinum layers A this complete covering of the interior of the platinum at the base was not possible, inasmuch as the stock of the interior layer of platinum was crowded in downward direction beyond the inner edge of the exterior layer of gold, as shown in Fig. 4. This is due to the greater the platinum layer at the base of the setting formed an objectionable feature to the same, as it tarnished after some time and assumed a blackish color which set off against the gold layer so as to mar the appearance of the setting. This is entirely avoided in my improved setting, in which the gold covers the platinum entirely at the base of the setting, and which is obtained by removing a considerable quantity of the stock of the platinum layer A at its center portion a, as shown in Figs. 7 and 7, so that the central portion of the platinum layer tapers toward the inner edge of its opening. By thus removing the stock from the center of the platinum layer A, then soldering it to the outer layer of gold, B, and subjectingboth layers to the successive action of the dies so as to give the final shape to the setting, the interior layer of platinum is forced down without crowding beyond the exterior layer of gold, which latter covers the platinum layer entirely, as shown clearly in Fig. 8, whereby a finished setting is obtained, in which no trace of the interior layer of platinum is visible at the base when viewed thereat, so that the setting when finished and polished shows only the exterior layer of gold, whereby the appearance of the same is considerably improved.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Adiamond-setting, composed of an interior layer of platinum and an exterior layer of gold, said interior layer of platinum being reduced in thickness toward its center opening so that the exterior layer of gold extends over the lower edge of the platinum layer and covers the same entirely, substantially as set forth.
